What is Biometric Passport and How to Ensure Biometric Data Accuracy?

Nowadays, more than 120 countries have adopted biometric passports since its inception. With superior counterfeit, unique security, and other value-added features, biometric passports seem to be the future. So do you know that what is a biometric passport and how to ensure biometric data accuracy?

What is a biometric passport?

The biometric passport is also known as ePassport, refers to the passport with an embedded microchip that contains individual biometric information, which can be used to authenticate the passport holder’s identity. The biometric passport owns greater security as the identification information will be printed on the home page and displayed in two lines of code below, which is hard to copy and imitate.

What Are The Advantages Of Biometric Passports?

Enhance security. As many new security features include face information, fingerprint information and iris information are stored at the embedded microprocessor chip, and the maximum scanning range of the ePassport is within 10cm only, thus it is impossible for fraudsters and criminals to capture the information and ensure the security of the passport.

In addition, the Public-Key-Infrastructure (PKI) with encryption characteristic stops any third party from storing any verification data on the chip. Once someone tries it, it will be caught immediately. The price of faking any biometric data is serious than anyone can imagine.

Improve convenience. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has encouraged countries around the world to accept e-passports since 2015 and provide convenient self-service check-in in a bid to achieve fast custom clearance. In this way, the ePassport will allow you to go through the E-gate at the border control fast and efficiently without being checked by the border control agent. The biometric gate will scan your data and uses biometric technology (face/fingerprint/iris) to match it to your data within seconds.

How to ensure the accuracy of biometric data?

As countries might adopt different biometric characteristics on their biometric passport, thus today we take fingerprint technology as an example and figure out how to ensure the accuracy of fingerprint data.

Generally speaking, the fingerprint recognition process involves four steps include fingerprint image acquisition, fingerprint image pretreatment, fingerprint image feature extraction, fingerprint matching and authentication.

?Fingerprint acquisition: The fingerprint will be captured by the fingerprint scanner. The more fingerprint details, the higher resolution of fingerprint image and more accuracy of fingerprint verification can be done. At present, fingerprint scanners include optical scanner, semiconductor scanner, ultrasonic scanner and radio frequency RF scanner.

?Fingerprint image preprocessing: After fingerprint acquisition, fingerprint image quality assessment is required. The preprocessing mainly includes image segmentation, enhancement, binarization and thinning. Through signal processing technology, it aims to remove all kinds of noise interference in the image, improve the quality of fingerprint image, restore the fingerprint ridge structure, elevate the accuracy of feature extraction and extract correct fingerprint features.

?Fingerprint image feature extraction: Feature extraction includes global feature and local feature. Feature points provide certain fingerprint confirmation information, among which the most typical are terminal point and bifurcation point. Feature extraction is to detect the number, type and location of feature points and line orientation, in a bid to reduce the false feature points and improve the later matching speed and fingerprint recognition performance.

?Fingerprint matching and authentication: It contains 1:1 authentication and 1: N authentication model. The 1:1 authentication refers to compare the fingerprint feature with the stored fingerprint template to prove whether it is the person. The 1: N authentication means to pick up one specific fingerprint from N pre-enrolled templates, and then know who he is.
