HID Global Debuts One of The Smallest RFID Glass Tags That Delivers Industry Leading Performance
Source: HID Global
New ISO-Compliant Glass Tag Mini, the Size of a Grain of Rice, Allows Tagging of Very Small Animals and Outperforms Similar RFID Tags By Up to 20 Percent

HID Global, trusted leader in solutions for the delivery of secure identity, today announced its Glass Tag Mini 1.4 x 8 mm, a new radio frequency identification (RFID) glass tag that can be easily implanted in very small animals and used for other industry and logistics applications. The new Glass Tag Mini delivers exceptional read range for its size, while outperforming other glass tags of similar size by up to 20 percent. The tag represents the latest application of HID Global’s patented direct-bonding technology that enables more compact tag designs and optimized read ranges.

HID Global’s breakthrough chip-handling capability enables the company to process micro-sized chips that are less than 0.3 square millimeters – comparable to a grain of rice and up to 75 percent smaller than previous generations. This, in conjunction with HID’s patented direct-bonding technology allows the company to mount antennas to the smallest integrated low-frequency chips available, such as EM4200 from EM Microelectronic and Hitag μ from NXP Semiconductor, and has led to the development of products such as the Glass Tag Mini.

“Smaller is better for implantable animal ID tags, but only if the tags can be read reliably,” said Jean-Miguel Robadey, director of business development for Identification Technologies with HID Global. “The Glass Tag Mini sets a new, higher standard for implantable RFID transponders, especially for tagging small animals. Today, HID Global’s exclusive ability to handle the new generation miniature chips enables the production of smaller animal ID tags that still deliver read ranges needed for reliable performance.”

At 0.05 inches (1.4 millimeters) in diameter and weighing one-thousandth of an ounce (0.03 grams), the Glass Tag Mini is among the least invasive subcutaneous animal tags on the market. The bioglass capsule ensures acceptance while protecting the enclosed electronics with unlimited resistance to water, fluids and chemicals. An optional parylene coating improves and accelerates tissue adhesion, preventing the movement of tags implanted subcutaneously. Glass Tag Mini transponders operate at low frequency (134.2 kHz) and are compliant with ISO 11784, ISO 11785 and ISO 14223 standards.

Glass Tag Mini application areas include production management systems for fisheries and poultry farms. The tag is also ideal for laboratory test animals, including mice and rats. Additionally, the tag offers a minimally traumatic identification tag solution for small pets, such as small dogs, cats and ferrets. Glass Tag Mini is also available with a 125kHz chip, for industrial applications requiring a micro-sized form factor.
