That’s the argument raised by Samantha Hu, territory sales account manager for IP surveillance at ACTi, in a recent webinar.

According to her, challenges facing bank operators include the obvious, for example the need to protect people and premises. But more and more, banks also seek to differentiate their operations and service to try to increase customer satisfaction amid the competition, she said.

One example of service improvement is VIP recognition, and this can be done through video combined with facial recognition. Upon detecting a VIP, staff would be informed of the visit immediately so they can take him to the VIP room, offer him tea and snacks, and show him the latest financial products or service based on his preference. “This is one way to increase customer satisfaction and revenue stream,” she said.

Meanwhile, video cameras are deployed throughout the bank teller area. This is not only for security but also to ensure that staff and employees are providing the best service possible At the same time this is also for evidence-gathering: should there be a dispute between the staff and customer there is always video evidence for post-event investigation. Sound analytics, in this case, can play a role as well – if there is an argument or commotion at the premises, sound analytics can pick it up and inform security officers who can then watch what’s going on via video transmitted to their smart device. ACTi already has this solution deployed in airports and believes that this could work well in banks, too, Hu said.

Besides operational efficiency, security is still the first priority for banks. Video combined with cutting-edge analytics can help in this regard. Electric fences drawn around sensitive areas like the vault or ATM vestibule can help detect intruders. Pre-defined length of stay in the analytics can also determine whether someone is loitering in the ATM vestibule.

ACTi solutions have been deployed in different banks, including Taiwan’s Mega Bank.
