The smart cities sector is full of growth and opportunity. Research firm IHS Markit reports that investment in global smart city projects will surpass US$12 billion by 2025, up from $1 billion in 2013.

The smart cities sector is full of growth and opportunity. Research firm IHS Markit reports that investment in global smart city projects will surpass US$12 billion by 2025, up from $1 billion in 2013.

In the past, municipalities focused on implementing surveillance technologies to enhance monitoring, evidence collection and crime deterrence. Today, large metropolises like New York, London and Abu Dhabi are utilizing intelligent internet of things (IoT) devices and connected systems to aggregate and disseminate real-time data. These systems deliver intelligence that plays a critical role in mitigating threats, streamlining operations and driving multiagency collaboration across the safety, security and transportation sectors.

Technologies that enable shortened response times, big data insights and trend reporting are seeing continued adoption in the smart cities sector. FLIR Systems is one of the leaders providing these innovative solutions. Here are three of FLIR’s latest offerings and why they are differentiators in the marketplace:

FLIR TruWITNESS for true situational awareness

Worn on an individual’s body or mounted inside a vehicle, TruWITNESS captures video, audio and location data. Unlike a traditional body-worn camera, TruWITNESS features FLIR Neighbor Aware interdevice connectivity technology. This allows TruWITNESS to act as an IoT device, triggering nearby TruWITNESS devices, fixed and motorized pan-tilt-zoom security cameras and other connected sensors to act upon an alarm event. These sensors combine to send alerts and stream data back to a central location running FLIR United VMS. By enabling real-time collaboration between the command center and first responders, TruWITNESS provides true situational awareness. For example, with TruWITNESS, a paramedic treating someone who has had a heart attack can live stream to a command center who can share the information with local hospitals. With TruWITNESS, a doctor could provide medical instruction to a first responder in real time, increasing the person’s chance of survival.

DJI Zenmuse XT2 with Thermal by FLIR for real-time response

The DJI Zenmuse XT2 with an integrated FLIR thermal sensor enhances awareness and situation management during tactical operations, emergencies and other high-risk scenarios. In the event of rescuing a hostage, a drone with a thermal camera provides a valuable aerial perspective that law enforcement can leverage to determine where to station officers. During natural disasters, drones help medical teams quickly assess damage, locate survivors and prioritize aid. Additionally, FLIR thermal payloads on a drone allow public safety personnel to see in complete darkness, smoke, fog or rain.

FLIR TrafiSense2 V2X for intersection safety

FLIR's line of intelligent transportation systems help vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles move safely and smoothly. Recently introduced to the marketplace, the FLIR TrafiSense2 V2X is a thermal traffic sensor with integrated vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology. Using thermal imaging, the TrafiSense2 V2X detects vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists at intersections even in poor lighting and harsh weather conditions. The sensor communicates this data to other V2X-enabled vehicles and infrastructure. These traffic insights make a variety of applications possible such as left turn assist, public transport priority and traffic signal preemption for emergency vehicles.
