Digital video transmission for analog systems is one of the most important issues for upgrading legacy systems. Matrix switchers route multiple audio and video sources to multiple audio and video destinations.

Featuring BNC connectors, SDI matrix switchers allow for any input to be sent to any or all outputs. They are ideal for routing HD broadcasting and other HD serial digital video sources such as digital cinema projection, biomedical imaging, satellite mapping and visualization, rental and staging environments, security surveillance, and other applications. Generally, they feature dual-redundant power supplies and are managed via front panel controls, RS232, RS422, and RS422 port for integration

Similarities & Beyond
The outlook of analog and HD-SDI matrix switchers is quite similar. Both transmit video signal via coax cable (Belden 1694A) and PTZ and audio signal via RS232, RS422, or RS485. However, with more powerful processor and operation system, the compatibility of HD-SDI matrix switchers is much broader than analog ones such as managing analog, HD-SDI, and 3G HD-SDI signals.

Easy Ride with IP
HD-SDI matrix switchers are generally equipped with Ethernet port(s) for network connection. Also, via digital video servers (DVS), SDI signals can be compressed into digital images, transmitting directly over an IP network. Over this distributed networks, centralized management can be achieved.

Stability and Redundancy
Evolving beyond analog matrix switches, HD-SDI matrix switchers are more or less different in terms of control, alarm notification, signal compatibility, OSD menu, and more. Thus, stability, reliability, and redundancy become even more important. For instance, modular design allows ease of servicing and expanding. Changeable card mode let power supplies, controller card, blowers, and some matrix cards be installed in redundant configurations. In case of redundancy, most HD-SDI matrix switches are configured with dual power supply based on demand. If the power source is not stable, the redundant power supply can be connected to different power source or self-built UPS.
