Smiths Detection has completed the installation of all the main security scanning systems in the newly opened Terminal 3 at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi, India.

The prestige contract to equip one of the world's biggest airport terminals included a wide range of advanced X-ray and trace detection systems to screen passengers, hand luggage and checked-in bags for explosives, weapons and contraband. See product range.

Smiths Detection President Stephen Phipson, CBE, said, “India is one of Smiths Detection's fastest growing markets and we are delighted that our advanced scanning systems are being used to enhance travelers' security at such a key transport hub for the entire region.”

JK Srivastava, MD of Smiths Detection's operations in India, said, “This is one of our most prestigious and biggest airport contracts with around 350 detection systems now in place supported by 19 on-site engineers who provide around-the-clock service.”

The state-of-the-art T3 terminal, which has 168 check-in counters, 78 air bridges and 48 contact stands, will eventually triple IGIA's capacity to around 60 million passengers a year. It will consolidate the airport's position as South Asia's key hub and one of the busiest in the world.

Smiths Detection equipment is installed in all of India's major airports. Other big customers include: Indian Armed Forces, the Presidential House, government, state and police departments, hotel chains, industrial plants and diplomatic missions.
