VIVOTEK’s edge-based smart parking solution finds success worldwide

VIVOTEK’s edge-based smart parking solution finds success worldwide
This article looks at VIVOTEK’s smart parking solutions powered by their cutting-edge, edge-based automatic license plate recognition or ALPR.
With over 20 years of history, Taiwan company VIVOTEK has become a leader in video technologies. Applications range from security to smart city and intelligent transportation, of which smart parking is an important part. This article looks at VIVOTEK’s smart parking solutions, which have found success in Taiwan and abroad.

VIVOTEK was founded in Taiwan in 2000 and is now a global leading security solutions provider. Today, the company integrates AI and edge computing across its services and strives to enhance the AI experience across vertical markets, focusing on smart cities, intelligent transportation and others. As parking management is a key element in smart cites and intelligent transportation, VIVOTEK naturally develops smart parking solutions, powered by their cutting-edge, edge-based automatic license plate recognition (ALPR, also known as automatic numeric plate recognition, or ANPR).

“In many situations, municipal operators and drivers often face challenges such as slow license plate recognition, complex system integration, and inefficiencies in parking access control. To address these pain points, VIVOTEK has developed an AI-driven ANPR solution that brings intelligence to the edge,” said Jackie Wu, Senior Department Head for APAC Sales at VIVOTEK.

According to Wu, putting ALPR on the edge brings various benefits to parking.

“Unlike many traditional parking solutions that require on-premises industrial computers for license plate recognition and data processing, VIVOTEK’s smart parking solution eliminates the need for additional computing hardware. Our edge-based AI cameras can efficiently capture license plate information and related data directly within the device, streamlining operations and reducing infrastructure costs,” he said.

Another key differentiator of VIVOTEK’s ALPR is its global adaptability. “Many existing license plate recognition (LPR) software solutions have limited support for international markets. However, VIVOTEK’s LPR technology not only supports major countries worldwide but also benefits from extensive real-world deployment experience, ensuring high accuracy and reliability across different regions,” Wu said.

And it’s not just license plates that VIVOTEK’s solution can recognize – it can identify other attributes of vehicles as well. “Beyond license plate recognition, our solution continues to evolve with AI advancements. We now offer vehicle attribute recognition, including vehicle type and color, which helps prevent issues such as mismatched entry and exit records (‘A in, B out’) and enables detection of vehicles without visible plates. These innovations directly address common pain points in parking management, enhancing security, efficiency, and user experience,” Wu said.

Gaining traction globally

VIVOTEK’s smart parking solutions have gained traction globally, with a primary focus on Europe, followed by North America and Asia. According to Wu, their regional prioritization is driven by several key factors, which are summarized as follows.

Europe: The region’s strong emphasis on smart city, intelligent transportation and sustainability has helped accelerate the adoption of edge-based ANPR technology, reducing reliance on on-site industrial PCs while enhancing integration with existing parking and toll systems.

North America: The region’s growing investments in smart infrastructure and increasing demand for automated parking management to address urban congestion all present strong potential, particularly in large metropolitan areas where efficient vehicle recognition and traffic flow management are critical.

Asia: With the region’s rising urbanization and increasing smart city projects, the adoption of AI-powered parking solutions is expected to gain momentum in the coming years.

Asia: Market potential ‘undeniably massive’

Further commenting on Asia, Wu said while Asia has been a lower priority compared to Europe and North America in terms of immediate adoption, Asia’s market potential is undeniably massive.

“Urbanization is happening at an unprecedented pace in Asia, leading to increased vehicle ownership and traffic congestion. Cities are under pressure to optimize parking management, reduce emissions, and enhance mobility efficiency,” Wu said, adding that one of the biggest advantages of the Asian market is its adaptability to new technology.

“While integration challenges exist due to diverse regulations and infrastructure readiness, the demand for efficient, scalable, and cost-effective smart parking solutions is definitely on the rise. This growing need aligns perfectly with VIVOTEK’s strengths – edge-based ANPR technology, seamless cloud integration, and AI-Powered analytics. By staying ahead of these trends, we can position ourselves as a key player in the Asian smart parking revolution,” Wu said.
