In this interview, Dr. Seong-Jin Yun, Head of R&D Center Advance Technology Division and SVP, who leads the IDIS AI Lab, discusses the direction of AI research and the role of IDIS’s AI technology in the global market.
Could you introduce the IDIS AI Lab?
IDIS has come a long way since developing the world’s first digital CCTV and DVR solution in 1997 – that was a great start for us. Since then we’ve built a solid record of introducing innovative, robust, and dependable security technologies. We passed another important milestone in 2017 when we established our dedicated AI Lab to develop video solutions using advanced artificial intelligence technologies. The IDIS AI Lab’s mission is ambitious and clear: to develop and harness AI innovations to create safer, more secure, and smarter environments. To this end, our lab focuses on the following essential research and development areas:
- AI Video Analysis Models: We develop deep learning-based video analysis models that accurately recognize and track people, vehicles, and objects. Our solutions provide real-time video analysis, object detection, and classification. We also offer intelligent video search capabilities through reidentification technologies, which help prevent crowd-related accidents and crime.
- Intelligent surveillance: We are developing a range of intelligent surveillance solutions equipped with AI technologies. These solutions are applied to our cameras, edge security devices, VMS, and cloud services. We have also developed the IDIS Deep Learning Engine, our proprietary inference engine, which we apply across various products.
- Data Management and Analysis: The lab is also building and developing systems to more efficiently manage and analyze large-scale video data, open new applications and further enhance security, safety and business intelligence.
What functionalities does IDIS AI Solution provide, and what value does it bring to customers?
IDIS AI solutions include key functionalities designed to address priority issues in the security and risk management arena and business intelligence, particularly for retail and hospitality sectors. Again, we are building on a successful strategy of working with our integration partners and end-user customers to targeting innovation where it can make the most difference. The key functionalities include:
- Object analysis and tracking: Our deep learning-based video analysis technology accurately detects and tracks people, vehicles, and objects, while organizing their attributes. Real-time anomaly detection and warnings are possible through object detection, classification, and action detection.
- Automatic license plate recognition (LPR): This feature automatically recognizes vehicle license plates for parking management and traffic control.
- Business intelligence (BI): Our solutions analyze customer behavior in retail and hospitality settings to increase operational efficiency and boost profits.
- Crowd detection: We offer solutions that help prevent crowd-related accidents or crime.
- Object reidentification: This technology allows intelligent search capabilities in recorded footage using object reidentification.
The value these solutions can offer customers goes beyond traditional security benefits. They are improving safety by detecting anomalies in real time and helping to prevent accidents before they occur. They are increasing operational efficiency, for example, with automated video analysis and data management to improve processes while optimizing resources. They support data-driven decision-making with tools to help businesses analyze customer behavior, enabling more effective marketing strategies and providing data that reveals clear activity trends around building occupancy, dwell time, and queue management. They are helping to improve customer satisfaction by enabling more efficient operations within safer and reducing the burden on often overstretched staff.
What is the biggest advantage of IDIS's AI technology in the global security market?
Reducing the customer’s cost burden and offering the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) is crucial to our proposition. To this end, we offer cost-effective AI solutions built on our proprietary inference engine, IDIS Deep Learning Engine, and highly efficient deep learning models. This enables us to provide competitive recognition accuracy and exceptional processing speeds, offering solutions at a lower cost than our competitors.
IDIS continues to develop deep learning models and train them to adapt to broad range of customer environments. This ongoing development has driven the sustained and incremental growth of IDIS AI product performance, helping solve real-world problems our customers encounter.
What AI-related research and development projects is the IDIS AI Lab working on?
One particularly exciting development is that we are now innovating AI solutions using a Vision Language Model (VLM).
Traditionally, addressing new requirements involved an extensive deep learning cycle, including data collection, model design, training, and deployment, which demanded significant time and cost. However, we aim to simplify this process with VLM, providing faster solutions that meet a broader range of customer demands.
How do you think AI and cloud technologies will reshape the market?
Cloud AI has advantages over edge AI due to its higher GPU (NPU) performance and infrastructure, enabling it to process more advanced AI functionalities. We expect the integration of AI and cloud technologies to significantly transform the security market in several ways, for example:
- Real-time data processing and analysis: cloud-based AI solutions enable the real-time processing and analysis of large-scale data, allowing security systems to detect and respond to anomalies more quickly and accurately.
- Scalability and flexibility: cloud infrastructure allows for easy scalability, enabling companies to adapt flexibly to rapidly changing security needs. This is especially crucial during large-scale events or emergencies.
- Cost efficiency: cloud-based solutions reduce initial investment costs and offer a pay-as-you-go model, enhancing cost efficiency. This allows even small businesses to adopt advanced security solutions.
- Intelligent automation: the combination of AI and cloud technology facilitates the automation of security systems, reducing repetitive tasks and improving overall security operations.
What trends is IDIS focusing on in the global AI security market?
IDIS closely monitors the most important trends in the global AI security market. We are actively enhancing our technologies in AI, IoT, access control, and parking solutions. We are also developing an integrated security platform with the scalability and flexibility to cover residential, school, and industrial environments to improve societal safety and security.
- Integrated safety solutions: With the increase in random violent crimes and school violence, there is a growing demand for automated, 24/7 surveillance solutions and emergency communication systems powered by AI.
- High-resolution AI solutions: The demand for AI functionalities in diverse environments is expanding, and we are actively integrating AI technologies into high-resolution solutions such as super-resolution. While AI has historically been limited by hardware performance and costs, recent NPU advancements have enabled higher-resolution processing to meet customers’ demands.
- Generative AI: Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, is influencing business strategies, and Vision Language Models are being applied to security system data to solve problems based on video understanding.
- AI security regulations: As concerns over the ethical application of AI and cybersecurity grow, the importance of regulations and guidelines surrounding AI technologies is increasing. As with the NDAA, IDIS will ensure compliance with the most important international and regional regulations as they evolve and new compliances come into force.
