Product testing: Haier’s AI 3D facial recognition smart lock

Product testing: Haier’s AI 3D facial recognition smart lock

Smart locks have lots of merits. They can deliver a smarter, more integrative home experience, not to mention being able to open even if the user has forgotten their keys. This article takes a closer look at Haier’s AI 3D facial recognition smart lock, based on product testing by a&s China.

With the development of the smart home industry, smart locks have become more popular. Among smart locks, those enabling biometric authentication have gained traction.

To this end, many vendors have rolled out smart locks with biometrics as the core. But to reduce costs, they have chosen inexpensive and commoditized technologies such as monocular recognition cameras, reflective fingerprint modules and others. However, these technologies are very easily breached, rendering the smart lock insecure.

Against this backdrop, Haier has launched their SV30 AI 3D facial recognition smart lock, which uses AI 3D face recognition to guarantee accurate recognition of faces, thereby ensuring the security of users and their homes.

Comprehensive features

The SV30 smart lock is consisted of the following components: a front panel, a back panel and various connecting parts. The front panel is equipped with a 153° wide-angle camera, infrared fill light, and AI 3D face recognition module. The ultra-wide-angle camera has a resolution of 1080P and a viewing angle of 153°, which can avoid blind spots. The infrared fill light below the camera automatically starts when the surrounding light is insufficient. At the same time, the camera is equipped with an IR cut filter to further enhance lowlight capturing.

The facial recognition module is consisted of a binocular camera and an infrared sensor. Unlike traditional monocular cameras, a binocular camera obtains images through the synchronous exposure of two lenses and processes the resulting 3D information to achieve better accuracy and performance.

Below the facial recognition module is a doorbell button which, when touched, can activate the camera, display, microphone and speaker. Below the doorbell is a fingerprint reader that can effectively identify live fingerprint information and detect spoofing. There is also a touchpad for entering passwords. Below that is an NFC reader which can read standard NFC cards.

At the bottom of the front panel is a Type-C USB interface and a mechanical door lock jack. The Type-C interface is mainly used to provide emergency power when batteries fail.

As for the rear panel, it is equipped with a 4-inch high-definition IPS display, a screen wake-up button, a cloud synchronization button, an unlock button and a lock-releasing knob, and the batteries are hidden inside the display.

Enhanced security

It is worth noting that the SV30 enhances security through the following:

1. AI 3D facial recognition: Unlike traditional face recognition modules, the SV30 takes 3D images which contain more depth information, ensuring that the system is not spoofed by masks or flat 2D photos. A more mature AI algorithm is used to improve recognition so that even if the user's face has changed with age, false rejection will not occur;

2. Automatic locking: When closing the door, the SV30’s safety bolt will be pressed into the lock core, and the primary bolt will extend to achieve automatic locking. When the door is unlocked but not opened, the primary bolt will automatically extend after 5 seconds to re-lock the door;

3. Anti-intrusion mechanisms: In order to avoid malicious intrusion, the NFC card, password, fingerprint and other identification modules will be prohibited from use for a period of time after multiple errors. If the front panel is attacked by force, an alarm will automatically be sent and pushed to the user’s app.

Other smart functions

As a member of the Haier smart home ecosystem, the SV30 smart lock can be controlled through the Haier Smart Home app, with which the user can do the following:

1. Check lock status;

2. Grant/deny entry to specific people;

3. Receive work logs: The SV30 records all events and collects video of people who loiter at the door for more than 10 seconds;

4. Remote monitoring: Thanks to the camera on the SV30, the user can monitor the door live from the app.

Further, the smart lock can be integrated with other smart devices in the home so that, for example, when the user returns home and the lock is opened, lights, air conditioning, speakers and other smart home devices will be activated, providing maximal comfort and convenience.

Product advantages

1. Comprehensive features: Multi-factor authentication is supported; automatic locking is enabled so once the door is closed, it's securely locked; an alarm will be issued when the lock is being force-opened by someone;

2. AI 3D face recognition: More face data can be extracted; advanced AI is used so the system can accurately identify subtle changes in the user’s facial information;

3. OTA upgrade support: The smart lock can be upgraded over the air via the Haier Smart Home app;

4. Smart integration: Through the Haier Smart Home app, integration within the Haier ecosystem can be achieved, thereby providing a better home experience.

a&s review

Facial recognition has gained momentnum as a touchless authentication method for smart locks. AI-based 3D face recognition can further enhance accuracy and recognition speed. This is where Haier’s SV30 AI 3D facial recognition smart lock comes in. Empowered with AI 3D facial recognition, the SV30 can effectively authenticate users and avoid being spoofed by 2D photos. With a high-definition wide-angle camera, the SV30 can allow users to remotely monitor the door to ensure security. At the same time, the SV30 can integrate with various smart home devices, allowing them to activate or deactivate whenever the user returns/leaves home, thus providing a true smart home experience. With the rapid development of the smart home, traditional smart locks can no longer meet the needs of users. In this regard, the SV30 provides a useful solution, delivering a smarter and more innovative way to secure homes.
