Upgrading campus safety with AI surveillance system integration

Upgrading campus safety with AI surveillance system integration
Establishing an intelligent monitoring integration system for the campus can ensure the safety of people, improve safety management capabilities, emergency response capabilities, and reduce the pressure on related security personnel.
The flow of people on a university campus is relatively complicated with events and activities happening everywhere. In addition to students and teachers attending classes, meals, club activities, and entertainment, people from outside the campus come to school for sports, further studies, and visits. Given this, establishing an intelligent monitoring integration system for the campus can ensure the safety of people, improve safety management capabilities, emergency response capabilities, and reduce the pressure on related security personnel.

Improve overall safety with digital surveillance system

The installation environment of this case is a large open campus, covering an area of more than 70 hectares. Lacking wall protections and located near popular business districts, it was difficult to control the free movment of people entering and exiting the school. The administrators needed a safe and comprehensive surveillance system that can cover the entire campus, effectively reducing campus blind spots and streamlining emergency response to achieve the goal of creating a friendly and safe campus for students, teachers and visitors alike.

Upgrading the existing basic surveillance system already in place will improve security, allowing the system to adapt to constant weather changes and 24/7 constant monitoring, while satisfying customer requirements for a solution that is fast, convenient, easy-to-integrate and demonstrates maximum flexibility.

Construction planning

The plan was to integrate the existing surveillance monitoring system of each campus onto one platform. In addition to integrating the current analog and IP cameras, as well as the recorders of each campus, the aggregate video feed and stream was connected to the central monitoring system (CMS)

Amplification of IP cameras and network video recorders

Deployment of new IP cameras to each campus, which are connected to the digital network through the NVR and central monitoring system. After installation is completed, the camera coverage rate of the whole campus went as high as 80%. The monitoring system is built on the principle of flexibility and scalability and can be adjusted and added accordingly.

Setting up a two-way voice SOS column

The school replaced the old SOS columns on the campus with new SOS columns. The new SOS columns have two-way communication and four-sided video functions. The equipment includes SOS signal lights, LED lights, cameras, microphones, emergency call buttons, etc. They can connect with the management center 24 hours a day and take countermeasures immediately.

Assist in the establishment of independent transmission environment

Establish a dedicated closed optical fiber network for the school district. All monitoring images and warning signal data are transmitted to the school computer room through a dedicated optical fiber network to ensure smooth and real-time signal transmission.

IP camera and NVR

This case uses IP cameras that can adapt to many different outdoor environments to provide high-resolution images with smooth and stable fps, with IR cut to ensure pictures are clear at all times. It has IP certification for dust and water resistance. On top of that, it is designed to suit the tropical weather climate in Taiwan and ensure weather conditions will not affect the stability of the recording.

A 16-channel network video recorder (NVR) was installed. Each channel simultaneously being able to support high resolution images, the latest image compression technology, and hard disk expansion. The embedded real-time multiplexer enabling no virus intrusion problems allows the school to save a large amount of data safety. It is user-friendly and supports iPhone and android app, allowing complete ease of use while maintaining security. It also pushes and broadcasts warnings to the CMS server simultaneously.

Central monitoring system

Video monitoring system integration is the crucial point for improving management efficiency for large sites. The CMS can simultaneously integrate IP cameras and video recorders, accommodating more than 5,000 cameras in total. It has high performance, compatibility features and lays a good foundation for future expansion and integration.

The CMS can be used for remote monitoring, capturing vital pictures, playback, warning and other management applications.Users can set up more than 100 accounts at one time and set custom user permissions, significantly enhancing management efficiency and reducing the risk of compromising monitoring data.

Two-way SOS columns

In the campus corners or large open spaces, there are often unassisted emergencies. Through the two-way SOS column, the service staff can be notified as soon as possible. The corresponding units can immediately understand the situation and exact location of the scene and take corrective actions.

All the SOS columns set up by Vacron have a two-way real-time voice communication function. It is equipped with four sets of high-definition IP cameras with IR LEDs, and IR cut filters and can be maintained 24 hours a day. Even in dark environments, clear images can provide a wide range of clear images. Each column is equipped with a highly sensitive microphone, which can pick up surrounding audio clearly. The attendant can understand the current situation and take immediate measures.

2. LED lighting
3. Four HD cameras
4. Emergency call button
5. Directional microphones
6. Loudspeakers

Case analysis

Before the implementation of this project, the monitoring systems of each campus were independent, meaning that the images and monitoring information could not be shared. Different user interfaces were required for each surveillance function. The images were stored in different locations, which presents serious obstacles for management. As events cannot be managed in real time, campus safety was greatly affect.

After the system was upgraded, relevant personnels can now manage the entire campus images through the central management system, and carry out duty assignment and collaborative management efficiently and in real time.
