Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), a leading university in Indonesia, faced challenges adapting to digital demands while maintaining educational excellence. Collaborating with Hikvision, they implemented smart classroom solutions and enhanced campus security. The integration of interactive displays, remote teaching tools, and advanced security cameras ensured an engaging, collaborative, and secure learning environment.
Challenges: Overcoming traditional teaching limitations and adapting to digital demands
The rapid evolution of digital learning technologies is creating a challenging environment for higher education institutions. In Indonesia, UMS, one of the country’s top science and technology universities, found that conventional tools such as whiteboards no longer met modern standards for presenting dynamic and intricate scientific concepts effectively. Given the university’s commitment to providing superior science and technology education, this was a particular challenge for UMS.
Another challenge was the surge in e-learning which meant that UMS had to provide more engaging and participatory distance learning experiences. This shift wasn’t just a response to unforeseen events like the pandemic, but also aimed at enriching the educational journey with enhanced accessibility and flexibility.
In addition, UMS wanted to elevate campus security to create a safer educational environment for students and staff.
The Solution: Smart classroom and safe campus solutions from Hikvision
To address these challenges, UMS partnered with Hikvision and the system integrator Zioncom Technology to upgrade their educational and security infrastructures. Central to this transformation was installing sixty 75-inch 4K Interactive Flat Panels (DS-D5B75RB/D) in classrooms and laboratories, making interactive learning and teaching a reality. In addition, HikCentral Enterprise ClassIn was integrated with UMS’s existing educational application to improve remote teaching and collaborative learning. The ClassIn software facilitates real-time remote screen sharing and is compatible with popular video conferencing tools such as Zoom.
To create a secure environment for students and teachers, UMS also implemented Hikvision’s safe campus solution. This includes 2 MP Fixed Bullet Network Cameras (DS-2CD3021G0-I) that help the school’s security staff track critical campus areas – including the site perimeter – 24 hours a day.
Benefits: A more engaging, collaborative, and secure learning environment
The implementation of these smart technologies has produced many benefits for UMS. The most obvious of these has been the enhanced efficiency in delivering science education. Interactive displays now enable teachers to present learning materials such as physics experiment videos, chemical diagrams, and biological illustrations in a much more dynamic and engaging way than ever before. Utilizing the split-screen functionality, meanwhile, lecturers can annotate multimedia content in real time which is very helpful for students learning complex scientific concepts.
The smart panels are also invaluable during laboratory sessions, where observing details of experiments or demonstrations can be challenging for students. Now, teachers can effortlessly capture these scenes using their smartphone cameras. By scanning a simple QR code, they can then project their mobile screens onto large interactive displays, ensuring all students have clear visibility of essential details.
Through the integrated ClassIn e-learning platform, remote students can now attend lectures and actively participate in group discussions, mirroring the classroom experience. In addition, digital content such as lecture recordings can be effortlessly updated and distributed, improving the accessibility of educational resources. Currently, the e-learning platform boasts 6748 registered users and 486 courses. It extends UMS’s educational reach beyond its campus borders, enhancing its reputation as a top-tier educational establishment.
Dr. Muzakar Isa, a lecturer at UMS is very impressed with these new tools. “I am very happy that Hikvision is present on our campus with this smart classroom solution,” he said. “It makes it easy for me to explain lecture material in a more interactive and modern way. There are no more time or location constraints, because the solution supports offline and online learning at the same time.”
Apart from the educational advancements, the deployment of an advanced video security system has enhanced campus safety and improved operational efficiency for security staff. As a result, students and faculty can now focus on their academic endeavors in a secure environment, confident that robust measures are in place to protect their well-being.
