Why growth is expected of facial authentication systems

Why growth is expected of facial authentication systems
Increasing demands are expected to drive the global facial authentication systems market, which is forecasted to experience double-digit growth over the next few years.
Needless to say, authentication by way of facial recognition has become more widespread, with deployment seen in various projects across the globe. Increasing demands are expected to drive the global facial authentication systems market, which is forecasted to experience double-digit growth over the next few years.

In access control and identity management, biometrics are used as the “what you are” factor, in addition to “what you have” (tokens and cards) as well as “what you know” (passwords). Among the different types of biometrics such as fingerprint and iris scan, facial recognition has become a more common way to authenticate people as they gain physical or logical access.

That said, a recent report by 6WResearch points out that the global facial authentication systems market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13 percent from 2019 to 2025, due to increasing demands from several fronts.

“Globally, the law enforcement application area captured the majority of revenue share at present, and the same trend is expected to witness over the coming years due to increased government spending in security systems for the purpose of criminal identification and investigation,” 6WResearch said. “Upcoming projects in several countries such as Digi Yatra, Tokyo Olympics, smart city and smart nation projects, and deployment of such systems across banks, airports and offices are expected to further propel the demand for facial authentication systems globally during the forecast period.”

Facial authentication systems have a capturing device, which is typically a camera. It then transmits the facial image back to the server to be matched against a database. Any problematic or suspicious individuals can then be identified, and an alarm will be sent accordingly to alert operators.

Yet more and more, the facial detection and authentication part is done on the camera itself, in keeping with the trend of edge computing in video surveillance. Whether this uptrend will continue and spread into various vertical markets remains to be seen.

Breakdown by region

By region, the North America facial authentication systems market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5 percent during the forecast period, 6WResearch said.

“Several initiatives has been announced by the American government for the use of such systems in border control application. Under these initiatives, the facial recognition systems would be used for every international passenger including American citizens in top 20 airports of the region. Also, plans are being adopted by the government for the use of such technology in non-airport border control areas,” 6WResearch said.

As for Europe, its facial authentication systems market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.2 percent, the market research firm said.

“Europe is the third largest revenue generating region in global facial authentication systems market. In Europe, countries such as Germany, France and Russia are the key contributors to the overall growth of the Europe’s facial authentication systems market in 2018,” it said. “But the GDPR rules (General Data Protection Regulations) could be a major restraint in future for such systems especially in law enforcement area. However, its usage in other areas are widely accepted.”

Finally for the Asia Pacific, its facial authentication systems market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 20.9 percent during 2019-25. “China and Japan accounted for the highest revenue share in the overall Asia Pacific facial authentication systems market in terms of revenues in 2018. Additionally, India is also emerging as a potential market for such systems owing to rising awareness among public and private enterprises,” 6WResearch said.
