Simple and durable — PoE a convenient power supply

The Zeno Technology ZN-NVR3200E-P Series of Network Video Recorders (NVR) includes three models: ZN-NVR3208E-P8/JS, ZN-NVR3216E-P16/JS and ZN-NVR3232E-P16/JS. These models are differentiated by IPC input supporting 8, 16 and 32 channels, respectively. For this evaluation, a&s tested the Zeno Technology ZN-NVR3216E-P16/JS NVR. This NVR uses a 1U chassis, measures 360×311.5×48mm, has a standard rack mounting, and weighs 3 kilograms.

The outer appearance and materials are the same as the other NVRs within the series. The case is a high-quality steel, which is painted black. The front includes indicators for PWR, HDD and NET, as well as a USB port, the Zeno Technology logo, and streamlined design lines. The design is artistic, but also strong and sturdy.

The external interface on the rear panel of the recorder is fully equipped. In addition to 16 IPC PoE ports, there are also ports for RCA, network, USB2.0, VGA, HDMI and power supply. The NVR uses a 110V~220V±10% power supply, can operate in temperatures ranging 0℃ to 55℃, and humidity of 10% to 90%. It consumes 20W of energy (not including the hard disk or PoE). When all 16 channels are in use the NVR uses roughly 180W with PoE. One thing to note is there are 2 SATA ports internally to support unlimited hard disk expansion, making it convenient for end users to use.

Excellent codec capabilities and compatibility

The basic capabilities of the Zeno Technology ZN-NVR3216E-P16/JS NVR are excellent — capabilities tested included video access, decoding, playback and compatibility.

Resolution: Supports preview, video and playback for IP surveillance cameras up to 8 megapix-els. It is also backward compatible with 6-megapixel, 5-megapixel, 4-megapixel, 3-megapixel, 1080p, 960p, 720p, 960H and D1 full resolution video formats.

Encoding format: Compatible with both H.264 and H.265 encoding formats. If using the H.265 compression format, the same resolution format and frame rate is stored using half the storage space.

Access capabilities: Network video access bandwidth can reach 192 Mbps. Supports up to 16 HD network video channels of full real-time digital channel preview and video recording.

Decoding capabilities: Supports H.264 and H.265 video decoding. Supports H.264 and H.265 video decoding with dual-coded front-end hybrid adaptive access, making it convenient to use for end users. Supports VGA and HDMI synchronous output. HDMI supports up to 4K video resolu-tion, as well as 3840×2160, 1920×1080, 1366×768, 1280×1024, 1280×720 and 1024×768. VGA supports up to 1920x1080 video resolution, as well as 1366×768, 1280×1024, 1280×720 and 1024×768.

Highly compatible: Can connect to IP surveillance cameras that comply with ONVIF and RTSP standards, as well as various major camera manufacturers. During testing the NVR was connect-ed to a variety H.264/H.265 cameras from different manufacturers, which could be quickly added with one click.

Simple, easy-to-use management interface — Personalized, innovative application

After turning on and logging in to the Zeno Technology ZN-NVR3216E-P16/JS NVR, the main display menu is simple and easy to use. The management content is separated into three parts: operation, information and settings. It supports batch import/export of front-end devices and con-figuration is conveniently and quickly completed. The management terminal supports a video split-screen preview mode for 1, 4, 9 and 16 channels.

The NVR has built-in VSS cloud service; supports P2P service; and can connect to the internet via browser, mobile client (VSS Mobile) and PC. Customers can scan the QR code provided after installing the VSS Mobile client to their mobile device. You can easily access the NVR video re-motely from anywhere with internet connection. Alarm messages can also be sent and received via the cloud to the mobile client, making real-time management easy for users.

The NVR supports third-party cloud storage services, image capture synchronization, video backup, as well as multi-vendor cloud storage such as Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. It also sup-ports network plug-and-play, SMTP and SSL mail alarms. Additionally, it supports hard disk S.M.A.R.T technology and bypassing of hard disk bad sectors, all of which significantly reduces the risk of data loss in the case of hard disk failure.

Intelligent face recognition & perimeter detection preview and playback without attenuation

The Zeno Technology ZN-NVR3216E-P16/JS NVR supports intelligent analysis. It has built-in 1 channel face recognition or 2 channel perimeter detection, and is able to search and playback video based on face recognition data and perimeter events. During testing, the management end carried out intelligent analysis in real time and displayed alarm information for video occlusions, tripwire detection and camera tampering. The intelligent functions reacted sensitively and quick-ly.

The clarity of images resulting from the source video that was compressed and processed by the NVR codec and the real-time video that goes through the client end were basically the same; the resolution was not attenuated during testing. Against the 24-color card the colors from the video source were basically the same. At the same time, the resolution and color reproduction during playback also had the same results as the original video source, with no attenuation. The test re-sults showed that the NVR’s video preview and playback functions work excellently. With the support of good basic functions, the NVR’s real-time video processing met expectations. It can synchronously playback a maximum 16 channels with no attenuation.

The Zeno Technology ZN-NVR3216E-P16/JS NVR is not only well designed on the outside, but also has excellent hardware. Internally, the video access, codec, playback and compatibility all also perform well. In addition, the performance of the NVR’s intelligent detection functions tested well, providing a strong foundation for using the NVR in intelligent applications. Furthermore, support of the VSS cloud service, third-party cloud storage services, mail alarms and hard disk S.M.A.R.T technology all greatly improve the end user's efficient management of a video surveillance system, which is one of the highlights of this NVR.
