Seeing significant trend toward roaming Vietnamese real estate as well as the governmental permission for foreigners to own houses for 50 years, Vietnam-based ION considered implementation of smart home system makes a promising future of real estate development. In 2015, ION started the smart home business ION Smart and related R&D for residential security solution, mainly integrating CCTVs, intercom, smart home camera, and E-parking systems.

ION Smart plays both roles as installer and system integrator. The company mainly cooperate with top five property developers and constructors in Vietnam to implement customized home solution for middle and high-class residential neighborhoods and buildings.

“ION Smart works closely with developers since a project’s initial stage, especially when our partner has no in-house design team. We evaluate a property’s requirement, and customize smart home design, integration and installation for various projects,” explained Gordon Tat, Managing Director of ION Smart, “Many factors need to be taken into consideration: cost, wiring, construction material, just to name a few. Our project partners prefer us to work from beginning stage with our abundant know-how.”

With foothold in local smart home market, Tat sees better business opportunities in southern Vietnam around Ho Chi Minh City as people are more likely to embrace modern technology. “While security is still having higher demand in the market, middle and high-end residential projects are interested in home automation integration such as lighting, curtain, kitchenware, HVAC controls with sensor and machine-learning functionalities,” said Tat.

Apart from serving as the back-end support of home systems, ION also distributes IOTX Smartlife and Vivotek products. However, total solution is still most appealing for buyers. “Comparing to add-on products, buyers prefer total solution ready in-home, which usually turns out to have better system connection and complete management,” said Tat, “With IOTX Smartlife’s home design software, we are able to see how well devices or access points perform in home environment through 3D images, and if they are in good connection with the management system.”

Mentioning user preference, Japanese and European brands like Schneider, Honeywell, and Bosch have great market shares in Vietnamese installer market, while single-products from Taiwanese Amroad and Dexatek are also popular.

Tat further cited that the system is applying data analysis in the coming future. As users control home devices through the app, data can be synchronized to control center for collecting and further analysis. “This feature will benefit property developers with a clearer clue what end-users really need at home, and assist decision making while dealing with new properties,” he explained. Another feature of the platform is the full integration with Amazon Alexa, benefiting its massive user database and the powerful cloud server.

“The future of smart home is inevitably equipped with AI analysis and deep-learning ability, which will push industry development forward,” said Tat. ION Smart will keep targeting the booming real estate as well as bringing connected technologies into campuses and factories of Vietnam.
