How should door entry and video be integrated?

How should door entry and video be integrated?

The video door entry system is more and more integrated with video surveillance due to the benefits such integration brings. How they should be integrated, then, becomes something that systems integrators should know.

That was the point raised in a recent blog post by Fermax titled “Quick guide to integrate video door entry and video surveillance systems.”

With video increasingly moving towards IP, its integration with other network-based security systems has become more and more possible. For example, integration with an alarm system enables video verification, which can then combat crime more effectively. According to Sonitrol, a security service provider, a traditional alarm response time of 21 minutes in Boston was shortened to just 7 minutes, 38 seconds when a video alarm was in place, a difference of 13 minutes, 22 seconds. In another report by the Partnership for Priority Verified Alarm Response, verified alarms have resulted in documented arrest rates of over 10 percent, compared to 0.08 percent for traditional alarms.

Similarly, integration between video and door entry systems has also gained traction. “Video door entry and video surveillance systems make up the ideal twosome for the security of companies, shops, hotels and residential communities. The integration of both elements allows monitoring from inside the building of outdoor areas such as the entrance hall, parking spaces and especially places that may harbor corners without surveillance,” the Fermax post said.

“With the aid of security cameras and the convenience of video entry it is possible to exercise great control over the area surrounding a building,” it added. “This way, family members, neighbors in a resident community and/or management staff can safeguard the building security from indoors with maximum efficiency. Thanks to the integration of video door entry and CCTV systems, the security and well-being are guaranteed.”

Fermax cited its own examples of video door entry systems that can integrate with video surveillance, including the LYNX video door entry line that is based on TCP/IP.

“One of the star LYNX products is the SMILE monitor. The complexity of the most traditional video door entry systems is surpassed with this model, which provides professional results and usability within everyone’s reach. The secret of its success lies in an on-screen OSD menu, equipped with an easily understandable iconography. In terms of design, Smile boasts a state-of-the-art polished finish,” the post said.

Another product from Fermax that enables integration with video surveillance systems is VIVO. “Its advanced IP technology lets you control multiple functions from the same monitor, related not only with security but also with well-being and convenience. Its capacitive touch screen is designed so that anyone, regardless of their greater or lesser experience in the use of these systems, can modify VIVO’s functions and adapt them to their needs,” the post said.

What to beware of

According to the post, integration between video door entry and video surveillance systems should be entrusted to a competent installer or technical service. While such integration is relatively simple, there are certain things to beware of, it said.

“(Installation of video door entry and video surveillance systems) consists of integrating a certain number of CCTV cameras with a compatible video entry system, which can be handled from an indoor area,” Fermax said. “Prior to the integration of these elements, it is convenient to plan the location of the cameras. Although it may come as a surprise, a significant percentage of video surveillance systems are vulnerable due to their easy accessibility for criminals. As a result, it is important to thoroughly study what your situation will be, in order to maximize their usefulness and prevent intruders from tampering with them easily.”
