Dahua’s 2018 vision part 1: How AI is changing the security industry

Dahua’s 2018 vision part 1: How AI is changing the security industry

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an inevitable trend that is influencing different businesses. In 2018, Dahua Technology aims to capitalize on AI in order to provide leading video technologies and solutions for IoT-related solution and service providers.

Lately, due to advancements in computing power and key chipset components as well as the efforts of algorithm developers, “AI” is no longer just a buzzword for security, but a reality in many projects such as smart cities. Video surveillance systems with deep learning capabilities are able to provide more accurate and meaningful data, analysis and services for various verticals such as smart retail, traffic monitoring and management, and etc.

“We have seen how AI is driving the latest developments in the security industry. In the past, the industry endeavored to produce high quality video — from high resolution to 4K, 8K and even 12K. Now, the focus is on empowering users to quickly acquire specific video data with analysis reports,” said Fu Liquan, Chairman of Dahua Technology.

Another key factor for the rise of AI in security is metadata, which can be accumulated from the millions and hundreds of IP cameras installed around a city. This provides deep learning video surveillance systems with a huge amount of real “samples” to learn from, making it grow more powerful. With the recent advancements in computing power, we can clearly see how AI is benefiting different businesses and ensuring security and safety at the same time.

“Take the transportation sector for example. Initially, license plate recognition is used for law enforcement. When structured vehicle data is combined with the police’s traffic monitoring video data, we foresee how AI and data-centric video surveillance systems can drive a city’s municipal management forward and further realize urban innovations,” said Fu.

Fu concluded with an observation about the influence of AI on various industries, saying, “Integrating AI and security technologies has become the main trend. Accompanied by other technological developments, such as IoT connectivity and cloud storage, AI will also dramatically change the security business ecosystem in the next few years.”

AI new vision

Dahua Technology, a leading solution provider in the global video surveillance industry, garnered around US$2 billion in annual sales revenue in 2016. In the first half of 2017, this grew even further to above US$1.1 billion, with the company reporting a 50.8 percent growth compared to the first half of 2016. Whether this growth momentum will continue over the next few years will rely greatly on how ready the company is for AI and related convergent technologies.

At the end of 2017, Dahua announced its new focus in the market for 2018, Fu said, “We are well prepared to provide leading video-centric smart IoT solutions and technologies for service providers. Since 2015, Dahua started its research into AI with a special focus on deep learning. Leveraging these years of R&D experience using CPU, DSP, GPU and FPGA chipset platforms, Dahua has now successfully developed powerful intelligent video surveillance systems with advanced algorithms for facial recognition, abnormal behavior analysis and high density crowd detection.”

As proof of its expertise, Dahua Technology won first place in two challenges of the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) Robust Reading competition earlier this year — the task [word recognition] of incidental scene text challenge and the born-digital image challenge, with an accuracy of 82.8 and 97.4 percent respectively.

These results demonstrate the significant implication of AI to video surveillance applications, especially in transportation such as for vehicle license plate recognition (LPR), container serial number recognition, logistics label context recognition and recognition of text captured by normal surveillance.

Before that, on September 28th, 2017, Dahua’s PSPO 3D scene flow method set a new world record and took the first place in the KITTI Flow 2015 Benchmark, a benchmark used to evaluate computer vision performance. In 2016, the Dahua-FaceImage facial recognition system even beat the record set previously by Baidu, Tencent, Google and others for Labeled Faces in the Wild (LFW) facial recognition.

Cloud storage service

To further realize AI and video-related technologies in smart IoT solutions, Dahua built on its theme of “Cloud ecosystem for smart future,” presenting the fusion of cloud computing, big data, AI, deep learning and IoT with security technologies.

The “cloud ecosystem” is tightly coupled to the Dahua video cloud, which creates value for customers by proactively working with strategic partners to deliver end-to-end total solutions. In the face of challenges posed by the smart IoT era, Dahua video cloud features a series of smart storage products which integrate intelligence with cloud storage, and video surveillance platform technologies into a single product.

Cloud technologies and services, such as intelligent cloud storage (from private, public and hybrid cloud), multi-dimensional big data, cloud magic cube platform, traffic management cloud, and cloud operation and maintenance center, will continue on to shape the layout and the momentum of Dahua’s video “cloud ecosystem.”

New future

Through multiple technological enhancements, industrial convergence will become an unstoppable trend in the future. All the industries involved in ICT, IT, internet business and security will continue to face new challenges and collaborate on projects. It would be key for any security company to determine how they can fuse together the different technologies in AI, big data, cloud computing and connectivity.

Dahua, now, is ready for any upcoming challenges and opportunities.
