CohuHD continues innovations on ruggedized cameras after acquisition

In 2014, Costar Technologies acquired the CohuHD camera products division from Cohu, which lead to the birth of CohuHD Costar. After the acquisition, CohuHD, continues their path in camera development for ruggedized applications.

“I would say in terms of the market segments, what we [Costar and CohuHD] serve, are very different. Costar is focused primarily on general security applications, particularly in retail and finance. And we are really focused on outdoor applications for ruggedized cameras, so they are very different markets,” said Tom Kampfer, President of CohuHD Division at Costar Technologies.

Although the two companies are quite independently run, CohuHD sees more opportunities and complementary after the acquisition, through an expanded product portfolio. “Even though the majority of our business is outdoor cameras for ruggedized applications, many projects also have requirement for Costar type of products,” Kampfer explained.

Keeping up with industry trend, CohuHD’s product range specializes in IP video solutions for traffic monitoring, security, surveillance, and military applications. However, to satisfy the minority group of analog users, CohuHD has several products with hybrid capability to help the transition from analog to IP. “The transition to digital and IP are clear, but we still support analog products for our customers. We still have hybrid products that we sell that support a legacy base of analog. The advantage of our hybrid capability is that they can operate in an analog environment today, and then as they transition to IP, they can just go to the IP side. So it’s a big advantage we have,” Kampfer said.

To fulfill the demand of end-to-end solutions today, CohuHD products are of ONVIF standard, which allows for integration of various products from other major brands. “We don’t have our own VMS – in fact, it’s an advantage for us. We can integrated with whatever VMS our customer has,” Kampfer explained.

In the future, CohuHD will continue focusing on their camera development, supplying the industry with more innovative ruggedized cameras for extreme operating environments.
