During morning or evening rush hours, the last thing the building manager or employees want to see is a long line of people in front of the turnstiles waiting to get to the other side. Throughput, or the rate at which people are accurately processed, is therefore another key component in a turnstile.
“Throughput requirements are always critical and are impacted by the following: current building occupancy levels, maximum building occupancy loads, employee work flows, and elevator banks and waiting area capacities,” said Mark Perkins, Enterprise Accounts Sales Manager at Boon Edam
In general, an office building turnstile can process anywhere between 30 to 60 people per minute. Usually, traffic peaks between 7 and 9 a.m. and between 5 and 6 p.m. Based on the turnstile’s throughput rate, one can calculate the number of lanes that should be open. The direction of the turnstile can also change. For example, during morning rush hours, there should be more in-bound lanes open, and during the afternoon rush hours, it should be the other way around.
After users’ security and throughput requirements are met, they look for the design and aesthetics of the turnstile. It would be best if the turnstiles blend into the overall design and look-and-feel of the building, and users can choose finishes ranging from wood to granite to plated titanium.
Stainless steel is the material of choice for office building turnstiles. “Normally we use stainless steel 304, but for some special places we will update to stainless steel 316. Stainless steel 304 is suitable for general conditions and keeps the device durable and operational. Stainless steel 316 is more suitable for seaside and outdoor environment as it has stronger power to resistant corrosion,” said Shirley Chen, Manager of Overseas Sales and Marketing at Jieshun Science and Technology Industry.
For the barriers in between the turnstile pedestals, they can be flaps, movable arms, and tripods, although the latter is not common for office buildings. “Flap is the best, because it has a thin and fashionable appearance, and it is widely used in office buildings and government buildings,” Chen said.
