Applications, service keep GIGA-TMS going all these years
With a history of almost 30 years, GIGA-TMS has achieved success in the market for RFID products and solutions. The company is based in Taiwan yet has built a strong presence throughout the world, especially in Europe, North America, and Asia.

With a history of almost 30 years, GIGA-TMS has achieved success in the market for RFID products and solutions. The company is based in Taiwan yet has built a strong presence throughout the world, especially in Europe, North America, and Asia.

The company, which carries the “PROMAG” brand, began as a manufacturer of magnetic-stripe card readers and barcode readers. Sensing the huge potential of RFID, the company migrated to that field in 1996, beginning with low-frequency (LF) RFID and then evolving to high frequency (HF) and now to ultrahigh frequency (UHF).

“For us, a breakthrough over the past three years is UHF, which is a more difficult technology,” said Sandria Liu, Sales Manager at GIGA-TMS. “More and more applications are now utilizing UHF, which reads a large number of tags at a time. A longer reading distance, meanwhile, is another advantage.”

UHF870 long-distance reader

The company’s UHF870 reader supports the ISO18000-6C Class One Generation Two standard, with frequency range between 840 and 960MHz. The new design has a built-in ANT800 polarized antenna and, combined with UHF tags, can achieve reading performance of up to 5 meters. Furthermore, it has two digital inputs and two digital outputs controlled with two types of interface – RS232/RS485 and Wiegand/RS232. All GIGA-TMS readers work with passive RFID cards.

With the rise of China as a security manufacturing giant, GIGA-TMS acknowledges the fact that selling standalone hardware based on price is a dead-end street. That’s why the company focuses on applications, customization, and service to differentiate itself.

Since RFID is all about applications, GIGA-TMS has lots of successful case studies to share. One of them has to do with readers at campsite shower facilities whereby the showers would be activated upon reading a prepaid card, saving users time and the effort to bring money and take it out. The new generation of the device has a display on it to show users the balances left on their cards.

GIGA-TMS products are also used in other projects, for example garment factories where garments are sorted into different batches before the dyeing process. Parking solutions are also available, helping users find carparks faster and enjoy the convenience of having the barricade open even before the car arrives.

The company sells to distributors and systems integrators, most of whom have stayed with GIGA-TMS all these years despite China’s competitive pressures. According to Liu, the value that GIGA-TMS provides is a major factor that brings customers back.

“We have the ability to customize our products to different use cases. To our SI customers, they can’t find another partner with our customization capability,” Liu said.

The company also attaches great importance to service. “For customers in Asia, if there is a problem, we fly there immediately. For those in more remote regions, we assess the problem and see if it can be resolved online,” she added. “Service is really important and is indeed one of the reasons why our customers are sticking with us.”
