SecuGen, an optical fingerprint device vendor, announced that Print Electronics, working with a local integrator partner, has delivered and implemented SecuGen fingerprint reader into the Tamil Nadu Health Insurance Scheme (TNHIS).

The TNHIS is one of many projects that comprise the Indian government's eGovernance initiative. The TNHIS is intended to make health care insurance available to India's rural poor, while the biometric component and usage of the SecuGen fingerprint readers are to help prevent unauthorized access at the point of authentication in the hospitals.

SecuGen fingerprint readers have been utilized in many e-governance projects across India, including health insurance and micro finance projects, which are critical for developing countries such as India. For the TNHIS project alone, SecuGen fingerprint readers have been used to enroll approximately 100 million fingerprints from about 15 million families in only 75 days. The fingerprint devices are used first to enroll each beneficiary into the system and then to identify them when they subsequently visit a hospital to obtain medical care.

Print Electronics is a SecuGen reseller partner that has been supplying SecuGen products to a wide array of projects in India for the past 10 years. "I am happy to say that the quality of SecuGen's fingerprint products is among the best in the industry. The technical support from the SecuGen team has been remarkable," said Nilesh Parikh, Director for Print Electronics. "When we requested ISO standard fingerprint template support on Linux, SecuGen responded quickly and accurately. It is hard to overstate the importance of a sensor that can withstand a great deal of punishment and still operate flawlessly. We are pleased to help our customers succeed in securing their operations at the scale and level of security needed by the Indian government and both large insurance companies and financial institutions."

Jeffrey Brown, VP of Sales for SecuGen said, "In the 10 years of our partnership with Print Electronics, we have found both their technical ability as integrators and their knowledge of the biometrics industry in India to be unsurpassed. We have not only done a lot of business together but it has been a pleasure doing so."

"For over a decade we have focused our efforts on developing and manufacturing fingerprint readers that are very robust, accurate and affordable. The Tamil Nadu Health Insurance project is a clear validation of that strategy. The characteristics that define our products are precisely what allowed this project to succeed. We are very pleased to have worked with Print Electronics in this recent endeavor," said Won Lee, CEO of SecuGen.
