Better security, lower TCO at Seoul apartment complex thanks to Axis integrated solution

Residential apartment complexes highly prioritize security, operational efficiency and total cost of ownership (TCO). Jagok RAEMIAN Fore Apartments, based in Seoul, Korea, has successfully achieved those objectives by deploying Axis Communications’ integrated security solution. For this article, asmag.com spoke with Daniel Mun, Country Manager for Korea at Axis Communications, and Justin Kumulia, the company’s Business Development Manager for Intercoms and Access Control, on how the solution was able to benefit Jagok RAEMIAN Fore operators and residents.

Jagok RAEMIAN Fore Apartments is located in the Gangnam District of Seoul. It was completed in 2014 by Samsung C&T Corporation, a leading construction company in South Korea. The complex consists of 15 buildings with a total of 1,070 households.

Outdated video system

The video security system the complex had been using consisted of some 300 network cameras with a pixel count of 410,000, manufactured by a large domestic company. The system was quite outdated, had poor lowlight performance and proved insufficient in addressing security challenges facing apartment complexes like Jagok RAEMIAN Fore.

“Apartment complexes like Jagok RAEMIAN Fore face a range of security and operational challenges – from preventing unauthorized access and package theft to ensuring resident safety, managing visitors efficiently, and responding quickly to emergencies. These challenges are often compounded by fragmented systems that operate in silos, creating inefficiencies and security gaps,” Kumulia said.

At the same time, the system featured 20 16-channel NVRs which took up a lot of space and generated overwhelming amounts of heat. Further, the camera manufacturer stopped its security business, making it impossible to receive after-sales service and technical support.

Enters Axis’s integrated solution

The apartment complex decided to replace the security system with a new one. According to Axis, the key selection criteria were: high camera resolution and performance; total cost of ownership so that it does not cost too much for continuous operation and additional installation; and a long-term, reliable technical support service.

After consulting a local Axis partner, Jagok RAEMIAN Fore decided to go with Axis’s integrated solution. It consisted of 322 Axis cameras, including AXIS M20 bullet cameras, AXIS M30 dome cameras and AXIS M31 dome cameras, each equipped with smart, AI-based analytics to enhance security.

“Axis cameras come with AXIS Object Analytics, an edge-based AI application pre-installed at no extra cost. By analyzing video directly on the camera, there’s no need for additional servers – reducing system complexity and infrastructure costs. Combined with Zipstream technology, bandwidth and storage needs are significantly lowered, resulting in fewer servers, reduced energy consumption, and overall cost savings,” Mun said.

Improved operational efficiency

The solution also includes 13 Axis network speakers that co-work with cameras in the most vulnerable areas and recycling collection points. Safety and management efficiency are maximized through such integration. For example, when cameras detect people smoking in off-limits areas or improperly disposing of trash, a guidance message can be automatically broadcast from the speakers.

“Axis network speakers offer a simple, cost-effective IP-based solution, combining power, connectivity, and audio in a single cable. With remote health monitoring, issues can be detected and resolved quickly. Compared to traditional analogue systems that require extensive cabling, this approach is more efficient, scalable, and easier to maintain. When integrated, cameras can automatically trigger audio alerts, enabling faster response and reducing the workload for security teams,” Mun said.

Lowered total cost of ownership

With the integrated solution, Jagok RAEMIAN Fore also achieved lowered TCO. According to Axis, after introducing the solution, Jagok RAEMIAN Fore had a 64 percent reduction in incidents/losses compared to the previous period, a 50 percent reduction in manpower and costs, and a 30 percent reduction in management work time. The numbers underscore the fact that if the right solution is deployed, users can save more money down the road.

“Many customers initially evaluate security systems based primarily on the upfront price or technical specifications of devices such as cameras or speakers. However, these systems are typically deployed for long operational lifecycles, often ranging from five to ten years or even longer. In fact, the cost of deployment is only about 30% of the cost incurred during this period of use. Much greater costs are incurred during operation. Labor costs, electricity costs, maintenance, etc. described earlier are all included in this operating cost. For this reason, it is important to evaluate the TCO throughout the system's lifecycle – from deployment and operation to long-term maintenance and eventual replacement,” Mun said.

He adds: “Besides these ‘cost’ aspects, advanced integrated security solutions are, beyond simple security surveillance, also possible to deter or prevent crime and maintain order, enabling improvements in security, safety, and efficiency.”

Ideally suited for commercial/mixed-use properties

While Jagok RAEMIAN Fore is a residential apartment complex, commercial and mixed-use properties can also find Axis’s integrated solution beneficial.

“An integrated Axis solution is ideally suited for the dynamic demands of commercial and mixed-use properties, where diverse user groups—tenants, employees, shoppers, and visitors—each have distinct access needs and schedules. By bringing together video surveillance, access control, and network audio on a single platform, property managers can efficiently manage access by location and time, monitor shared spaces such as lobbies and parking areas, and deliver ambient music, targeted messaging, or emergency announcements through network speakers,” Kumulia said, adding this will ultimately optimize foot traffic and delivery flows, strengthen security, improve operational efficiency and elevate the overall experience across the property.
