Discover how Ksenia Security built a certified green platform for intrusion detection & home automation. Learn about the PVC-free lares 4.0 controller, TCO benefits, and partner support for professional installers.
Ksenia Security’s booth was among the most popular at SICUREZZA 2025, one of Europe’s foremost security events, held in Milan from Nov. 19-21. Visitors were drawn not just to the company’s products on display—mainly home alarm and automation devices embedded in a unified ecosystem centered on the lares 4.0 controller, but to the story behind them: a young, ambitious Italian company that has, in just 15 years, established itself as a recognized player in European and global markets, based on a clean philosophy and clear message: Modern security products must be sustainable and help users live a sustainable lifestyle.
“We’re a certified green company and achieved this as one of the first in Italy,” said Nicola Di Crosta, International Sales Director at Ksenia, emphasizing that the company’s philosophy rests on two pillars: A regional ecosystem of trusted partners and said sustainability focus. Both pillars are vertically connected: In an industry where a medium-sized company such as Ksenia, which has about 60 employees at its production base in central Italy, cannot “go it alone,” putting principles into practice requires cooperation.
“We’re deeply rooted in the region,” Di Crosta said. “We are supporting the region and its economy as well. On the other hand, we’re strongly committed to innovation. Almost 30% of our team is in the R&D department.”
Integrated solutions across domains
Founded by Di Crosta’s brother and two partners, they envisioned Ksenia as a full-stack provider of intrusion detection systems and, over time, also access control, video surveillance, and home/building automation systems. Each of the three founders covered one area: Hardware, firmware and product development.
Sustainability, Di Crosta explained, permeates every aspect of Ksenia’s operations.
“We put a lot of focus on the low consumption of resources in our products and processes,” he said. “We don't use any PVC. The display in our keypads does not contain any mercury.”
The physical security industry, long reliant on durable but fossil-based plastics, is facing mounting pressure to re-think its approach to product design. Governments, regulators, and customers alike are urging manufacturers to replace traditional plastics with alternatives that are less harmful to the environment. Ksenia is well-ahead of the curve in this regard.
“Our sustainability philosophy also includes our production site and even marketing materials,” Di Crosta said. “Each one of those elements might be a drop in the ocean, but together they are meaningful.”
lares 4.0-centered architecture
Ksenia’s approach to sustainability is based on innovation, as is every one of their products and the way they are integrated with each other, solutions provided by regional partners and tech giants such as Google or Amazon.
At the center of Ksenia’s ecosystem is the lares 4.0 control panel, an IoT open platform that integrates intrusion detection, video security, access control, and building automation, all controllable via one unified interface. lares 4.0 supports third-party apps, such as Amazon’s Alexa or Google Home, which end users can simply download onto their device and use to voice-control their system. lares 4.0 can also be integrated with professional video management systems, such as Milestone XProtect, via a dedicated plugin.
“All core functions are integrated with our cloud solution, with versions of our apps tailored to the needs of different users,” Di Crosta said. “Our cloud offering is free of charge and comes with the product. No subscription is needed.”
lares 4.0 can orchestrate home automation systems including:
- alarms & intrusion detection
- entrance doors/gates
- energy consumption
- lighting
- temperature / climate, including thermostat/chronothermostat functionality
- irrigation, shutters / blinds, etc.
lares 4.0 is highly modular. Its embedded microcontroller has a CPU clock of 240 MHz, 512 KB RAM, up to 4 MB flash (for certain models), NAND 32 MB (or larger in some configurations), microSD slot, Ethernet port, and built‑in 4G/LTE / PSTN module support. Its core control logic remains modest and (energy) efficient, while connectivity — including 4G/LTE backup and IoT/cloud capabilities — is handled by a certified cellular module. Core components of lares 4.0 are designed by a partner of Ksenia in Korea that assembles chipsets in China.
New products
The wide range of Ksenia solutions was on full display at SICUREZZA, where it presented a host of new products. They included:
- the conexa IP keypad, with increased performance specs to manage greater numbers of home automation sub-systems and third-party apps
- the creo-S BUS keypad, further hardened against cyber-threats and tempering attempts
- the auxi-HL wls and auxi-HT wls wireless home automation modules, designed to manage the lights and roller shutters in a home or building, respectively
- the MINI TAG, with RFID based DESFire technology hardened against fraudulent access attempts
- the SecureWebe portal, offering exclusive services to installers
Design is another pillar that sets Ksenia apart. The company works closely with architects and designers to ensure that every product is both functional and aesthetically appealing.
“Our design is very minimalistic. We have reduced the form-factor and material use of our products, while keeping or expanding their capacity,” Di Crosta said.
This approach has secured Ksenia contracts with high-profile institutions that needed compliant, security and cybersecurity-certified solutions that are also sustainable and appeal to the design-savvy. Outside Ksenia’s European core markets, this includes projects at the Singapore Art Museum, and in New Zealand and the Middle East. Additionally, Ksenia products are installed in businesses and people’s homes in over 70 countries.
The allure of “Made-in-Italy” might be strongest in categories such as luxury cars, but it also extends to people’s homes, including security systems.
“People want to surround themselves with good things, beautiful things,” Di Crosta said, adding, however, that the highest level of quality is equally important. “We test every product before we ship it from our production base in Ripatransone. We are talking about something that has to protect the most important things you have in your life—not just the house you live in, your possessions—but also your family.”
