Milestone Q&A: AI and open platform solutions fuel Vietnam market growth
In our first article with Malou Toft, Vice President for Asia Pacific at Milestone Systems, we learned that the Vietnam security market is experiencing significant growth, driven by government investment in smart city projects and growing emphasis on data-driven solutions. But what specific technologies are driving this change? In part 2, we delve deeper into learning how they are leveraging AI and big data to empower Vietnamese organizations.
In our first article with Malou Toft, Vice President for Asia Pacific at Milestone Systems, we learned that the Vietnam security market is experiencing significant growth, driven by government investment in smart city projects and growing emphasis on data-driven solutions.

But what specific technologies are driving this change? In part 2, we delve deeper into learning how they are leveraging AI and big data to empower Vietnamese organizations.

asmag: Which technologies are in demand in Vietnam? How has your company addressed these in your product/solution portfolio or strategy?

Toft: The use of AI is on the rise in Vietnam, with the technology being applied in smart urban areas, healthcare, insurance, smart agriculture and environmental technology. The country currently ranks 26th in the world in AI research capacity, and the Vietnamese government has been actively promoting the development of AI applications in line with its national strategy for researching, developing, and applying AI by 2030. With strong government support, AI and big data have also become key strategic factors for Vietnamese enterprises, and many look to leverage these technologies to optimise work efficiency, enhance customer experiences, and reduce business costs.

In Vietnam’s security sphere, there is similarly a growing focus on AI and data analytics. Organizations are going beyond passive surveillance — it is no longer about simply viewing video footage but making sense of it. Organizations are looking to leverage insights from video data and use this data in conjunction with AI algorithms to boost efficiency and optimise processes.

In line with this trend, Milestone Systems has already incorporated AI into its solutions, and we have been empowering organizations in Vietnam and around the world with data-driven video technology.

Some ways we have leveraged AI in our solutions include AI-powered video analytics, which allows for the swift and automatic analysis of surveillance footage, providing rapid insights for strategic decision-making, benchmarking trends and configuring rule-based alerts. This aids in occupancy and crowd management by providing security teams with accurate people counts in real time along with comprehension of people flow and fluctuations in specific areas. Our AI-powered video analytics also allows organizations to extract more value from their existing video surveillance systems by making video searchable and actionable.

Organizations have also been using Milestone’s AI-powered video management software to process vast amounts of data faster and more accurately. Security teams have also used the software to trigger alerts in real-time that can proactively notify appropriate personnel and bring attention to situations they might otherwise miss. This enhances their security response to various scenarios and allows them to react more rapidly to incidents and emergencies. Furthermore, Milestone’s open platform video technology also works with AI-powered access control solutions to integrate events and associate security cameras with access control hardware. This allows for frictionless access control and integrated video verification.

As we continue to develop and enhance our AI-powered video technologies, Milestone remains committed to advancing responsible AI. We are one of the first companies to adopt the G7 Code of Conduct for Organizations Developing Advanced AI Systems and will continue focusing our efforts on building our software with trust, transparency, and accountability.

asmag: How was customer demand in terms of specific products/solutions?

Toft: For video surveillance, customers look at both hardware (including cameras, servers, and storage) as well as software (video management software and video analytics). We’ve observed that customers tend to place higher focus on software, as it allows them to choose and customise various capabilities and functions as needed, depending on specific use cases, for a more holistic solution that is better tailored to their business needs. Ultimately, there needs to be a balance between functionality and cost of ownership.

asmag: Which features or services were important for your product/solution offerings to be successful in the Vietnam market?

Toft: In Vietnam’s current competitive market, customer experience is a key differentiating factor for video management software. Given the critical importance of video surveillance both in and beyond security, video management software needs to be running all the time, and adequate technical support for customers is vital to minimize downtime. As such, Milestone Systems provides training and certification to our distributors and resellers, ensuring that they are well-equipped to help end-customers troubleshoot issues if systems are down. We also provide additional assistance via our in-house support team when issues are complex.

Another important feature is interoperability, which ensures that systems are future-proof. As technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, new solutions must be able to integrate seamlessly with legacy systems. This helps end-customers ensure continuity, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness as they improve existing solutions through digitalisation.

Organizations looking for interoperability should consider open platform solutions. Beyond integrating easily into an organization’s existing systems, open platform solutions also work seamlessly with software and hardware from other technology partners and are flexible enough to adapt to the current and future needs of the organization.
