With the integration of network cameras, speakers, intercoms, and analytics, Anahuac University, Queretaro campus, has evolved into one of the most innovative university security systems in the country.
Encompassing the perimeter
A guiding vision of Anahuac University is its commitment to students, parents, teachers, and employees. The mission and institutional values revolve around the quality and value of its offering, since it is vital to provide the best education, the best service, and the best facilities to its entire community. With this in mind, in 2019 school leaders at the Queretaro campus decided to embark on a long-term project to revamp and improve the security of its facilities in order to create a safer environment for everyone.
Francisco Reyes, Head of General Services at Anahuac University Queretaro, recalls that during the early stages of the project the objective was to replace their video surveillance tools with technology solutions that would allow for seamless supervision of all areas, such as classrooms, offices, and common spaces.
Francisco Reyes, Head of General Services at Anahuac University, said "We continue to grow, and it is fundamental that the security infrastructure grows hand in hand with Axis network cameras, speakers, and access control devices."
Anahuac University selected Alarmas Guardian Group, an Axis partner and specialists in designing security no matter the complexity or the context as the project leader. The 25-year-old company focuses mainly on access controls and video surveillance devices, serving more than 25,000 clients.
Eric D. Moreno, Director for Corporate Projects at Alarmas Guardian Group, says that they began by identifying the security needs of the university. “A unified video surveillance system focusing on the detection and identification of threats within the university was required. The new system needed tools that provided high-quality video streaming for forensic analysis, which would help with the mitigation and prevention of crime, while reducing response times,” he added.
Better visualization and protection of the university community
Alarmas Guardian carried out the design and engineering for the placement of perimeter cameras. The integration of the new technology allowed Anahuac University to take campus security to the next level of innovation. “The benefits of Axis technology are high-resolution video streaming, specialized technical support, the design and architecture of the solution, as well as a 5-year warranty including cybersecurity on all equipment connected to the network,” stated an Alarmas Guardian expert.
“Axis offers advanced analytic applications using deep learning-based artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor people in public spaces. They also have network video intercoms that are integrated with cameras that are equipped with AXIS License Plate Verifier analytics, allowing not only license plate recognition but also verification against a database. Network horn speakers were installed with pre-recorded messages to generate warnings to external people who are in unauthorized areas,” he added. Thanks to this, the university took the next step to improve the control and tracking of vehicular access, as well as allowing security guards throughout the campus to communicate through intercoms that guarantee a safe entry to the facilities for both students and staff.
After the integration of high-resolution network cameras and horn speakers in the parking area and interior corridors, the perimeters of all campus buildings were secured. Additionally, incidents and high-risk situations within the university were reduced, while crime rates decreased considerably.
Anahuac University continued to innovate and invest in the latest technology for the safety of their community. As part of the next stage of this project, the university's security department plans to implement the use of wearable devices such as Axis body worn cameras. The devices will enable them to document all interactions with security guards for use as evidence in the event of altercations or other incidents.
Ensuring the Safety of Students
Confident that this security project is of great significance to the Mexican educational sector, the Anahuac University Queretaro and Alarmas Guardian Group team believes that the successful installation of over 600 new cameras on campus has greatly contributed to ensuring the safety of approximately 10,000 individuals. This strategic undertaking enhances the overall security infrastructure, allowing students, faculty, and staff to benefit from a safer and more productive academic environment.
The Queretaro campus continues to expand with the construction of a new classroom building, a new parking structure, and a planned auditorium.
“We continue to grow, and it is fundamental that the security infrastructure grows hand-in-hand with Axis network cameras, speakers, and access control devices,” added Francisco Reyes. According to him, it is expected that the campus will grow 30% by 2025.
In this regard, the Director of Corporate Projects at Alarmas Guardian assures that the institution will be outfitted with technological security solutions. For his part, the principal of Anahuac University Queretaro campus confirms that the relationship with Axis is long-lasting. “The university will continue to grow because of the great service it offers to its community. Thanks Axis! You can count on us for more projects together.”
