“Solutions that gather and use data with increasing effect will be key over the next decade,” Stevens said. “These will make it easier to look for and identify abnormal behavior patterns and to take faster action. For example, this may be if a staff member who normally turns up every day at 8 am unexpectedly swipes in at 8 pm on one occasion or if somebody makes a request to download sensitive data – there are many potential scenarios, and better data processing increasingly makes it possible to identify them. Because IT and physical security systems are now better connected, usual events like this will be flagged up in real-time.”

Data will also support better planning to improve efficiency and operational effectiveness; for example, heat mapping will be increasingly used across estates to improve the deployment of resources and drive down risks.
