Motorola Solutions’ acquisition of security companies continues with the purchase of Videotec, an Italy-based ruggedized video solutions provider. In this article we take a look at this latest deal and what it means for both.
Motorola Solutions seems unstoppable with its acquisition endeavors in the security industry. Just in March
it acquired Ava Security, a U.K.-based global provider of cloud-native video security and analytics. At that time the company said it had no further M&A deals to announce. Then it bought video analytics start-up Calipsa in April and now, Videotec.
Videotec is a video surveillance solutions provider with presence across five continents, distributing to over 100 countries from its production site in Italy. The company focuses on cameras and accessories for monitoring both civil and industrial external environments. Its PTZ and fixed cameras are known for being robust and ruggedized, making them especially suitable for sectors such as oil and gas, maritime, rail, airports and critical infrastructure.
Examples of the kinds of products and solutions Videotec makes are: the Maximus MPXL Series2 PTZ camera that combines a day/night camera and a long-range LED illuminator in a single device, ideal for classified areas such as drilling rigs, refineries, tanks, or the monitoring of processes in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing; and ULISSE EVO DUAL, a PTZ network system combining a visual camera and a thermal camera, ideal for outdoor video surveillance of perimeters and borders, critical infrastructures, traffic and railways.
Getting a further boost
The acquisition strengthens Motorola Solution’s product portfolio. The company already has under its umbrella such brands as Avigilon,
Pelco, Envysion, and IndigoVision. With two other brands, Openpath and Ava, Motorola Solutions gains further inroads into cloud offerings for chiefly enterprise users. Now the company has Videotec, which along with Pelco will help Motorola Solutions boost its portfolio with critical infra-related products and solutions.
"Protecting the security and operational continuity of critical infrastructure is vital to our cities and businesses,” said Greg Brown, chairman and CEO of Motorola Solutions in the press release announcing the acquisition. “With Videotec’s specialized suite of cameras, we’re extending the breadth of our portfolio to help secure and support the demanding environments of these complex, essential industries.”
The PR also quoted Alessio Grotto, CEO of Videotec as saying: We're excited to join Motorola Solutions, bringing our technical expertise in extreme environment camera design to continue driving their mission as a global leader in video security. Together we will continue to innovate technologies that stand up to some of the most challenging conditions – protecting people, enabling productivity and supporting business continuity for essential industries around the world.”
Final word
Motorla Solutions already ranks No. 5 on asmag.com’s 2021
Security 50 listing, with 2020 security equipment sales revenue of US$927 million. Its high ranking has largely to do with the company’s various acquisitions over the past few years as the company sought to widen its reach into different verticals and segments – and adding Videotec to its wing will certainly help with that endeavor. With the company unlikely to stop its acquisition effort anytime soon, Motorola Solutions’ influence in security will only get bigger, and its becoming a top formidable player in the industry is all but expected.
