Two companies in providing secure and streamlined access to buildings and facilitating movement around public and private facilities have joined forces to enhance security while streamlining pedestrian traffic flows through lifts.

Schindler and Royal Boon Edam have combined their expertise to produce a security speed gate system that integrates with lift and pedestrian access destination technology to provide users with a seamless journey that reduces waiting times by up to 50%.

Enhanced transit efficiency

The new global partnership, known as ‘The Power of Two’, delivers an integrated system that greatly enhances transit efficiency, especially in high rise buildings with multiple lifts, and including public and private facilities throughout the Asia-Pacific and Australasia.

The time between entering a speed gate and reaching the lift (typically 5-10 seconds) can now be utilized to call the correct elevator, using Schindler’s industry destination algorithm. Security is enhanced throughout the entire process, with Boon Edam Speedlane Lifeline speed gates preventing unauthorized personnel entering a waiting lift, said Boon Edam Australia Managing Director Michael Fisher.

“The new partnership has considerable benefits to customers throughout Australasia, by combining the best technologies from leaders in their individual fields and making them readily available from one source.” Specifiers, architects, builders, refurbishers and security specialists will now have access to the harmonized technologies through the national and global networks of both organizations, he said.

Two technologies, one solution.

As a global elevator destination control systems, Schindler’s PORT Technology has rapidly expanded its footprints into mobility solutions within buildings. The PORT Technology offers its users secure access and seamless journeys throughout an entire building. It, therefore, made perfect sense to combine PORT with Boon Edam and unique welcoming and secure entrances, creating one slim, attractive and cutting-edge solution that answers the needs of both: the secure, seamless and efficient movement of people.

“A key element of this partnership is bringing together two globally proven and established technologies to provide additional benefits to users within a sleek and elegant design,” said Fisher.

“Instead of performing two actions – card access and lift calling – users can now just do the one and have their waiting times reduced in the process,” he said.

Seamless and secure elevator destination control

By integrating PORT into the speed gate, a visitor or resident can be quickly authorized via RFID card or the myPORT smartphone app whereby visitors can be granted access via a web-based color code. Once authenticated, the PORT’s elevator dispatch algorithm instantaneously allocates the best possible elevator to the passenger.

While the PORT device authenticates and guides the visitor or resident, Boon Edam’s Lifeline Speedlane Swing takes care of the entrance management. The Lifeline Speedlane Swing has been revolutionizing the security industry since 2014 and is well-known as the slimmest, fully operational speed gate in the market.

The speed gate has been developed with aesthetics in mind, and its smooth, premium glass casing houses intuitive-coloured LED lights which effortlessly glide along the tapered cabinet top to ease the visitors seamless through the checkpoint.

Tailgating detection with style

This product effectively detects tailgating, and the aesthetics can also be easily adjusted to either blend in or stand out, depending on the needs of the elevator lobby area.

The power of two – seamless integration of smart technology

Jeroen Thuis, Group Business Development Manager, Royal Boon Edam International said: "We strongly feel that partnering with adjacent industries in today’s connected world is a must to continuously offer the best solutions to our customers. With combining the most sophisticated elevator control systems and the number one speed gate, Schindler’s PORT Technology and Boon Edam offer the best of both worlds in one – seamless integration of secure entry management and elevator destination control."

PORT makes use of mobile phone applications and smart technology, aiming to ease the user’s trajectory through the building while ensuring their security at all times – even though invisible.

“The increasing importance of speed gates in larger office or mixed-use buildings encouraged PORT to redefine the meaning of “seamless” and further extend the functionality of both the software and the speed lane itself,” said Tobias Friedli, Head of Design – Transit Management Group, Schindler.

The Schindler PORT device is completely integrated with Boon Edam’s speed gate and provides users with early elevator allocation information from the industry’s leading destination algorithm,” he said.

Fisher believes the mutually beneficial partnership with Schindler will not only benefit customers, but will provide benefits for architects, building designers, and system integrators.

“Schindler and Boon Edam are both looking to the future. Both companies are striving to provide genuine value to their customers through the most advanced technologies that guide people’s movement and ensure their total security in the process,” he said.

“Companies designing the buildings of the future can now specify an entrance security system and lift destination control system all from the one source and have it completely integrated, with the assurance that it’s backed by two companies with strong focuses on service.”
