Phnom Penh, the bustling capital city of Cambodia, is set to get an overhaul of its existing traffic light system in order to make way for a modern one.

With the help of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), local authorities in Phnom Penh have initiated work on a US$15.2 million project aimed at not only alleviating traffic congestion, but also improving the overall safety and security of the city. According to the non-profit organization, the project entails replacing old traffic lights at 100 intersections with “smart” ones that feature built-in surveillance cameras. A command center will also be established to manage the traffic lighting system and video feeds.

With this intelligent transportation system, authorities will be equipped with real-time information that will allow them to monitor and react quickly to minimize traffic and gridlocks. The cameras adds a security element to the system which would help them catch criminals.

Currently, electrical cables that will connect these new lights to the command center are being laid down all over the city and it is expected that this Japanese-funded project will be completed within two years' time.
