Since June last year, in an effort to crack down on corruption in Macau, casinos are required by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) to maintain a high level of surveillance coverage for all their gaming-related areas and activities. According to Charles Cousins, MD of APAC and Japan at Genetec, “There is no doubt that China’s clamp down on corruption has contributed to the reduction in the number of high rollers that visited Macau to enjoy and/or disburse ill-gotten gains. But probably the travel restrictions on the general population (one trip per month) has probably had a far greater impact.”
Though the anti-corruption crackdown impacted expansion plays of several casinos in building additional VIP rooms for high rollers, it does not affect Genetec’s plans. “Macau is a long term play for Genetec and we expect many new and refresh opportunities to arise as casinos look for more sophisticated and scalable solutions to meet their surveillance needs,” Cousins explained.
In an effort to improve the current situation of the gaming industry, casinos have switched their focus from high rollers to the mass market. According to Cousins, “There is no doubt that the concept of the integrated resort, as seen in Singapore, is catching on. Casinos must offer more reasons to hang around the establishment rather in addition to the opportunity to make (or lose) money. Quality restaurants and upmarket shops for the winners, complimented by food courts for the losers, not to mention many shows and events headline by global stars.
