Vietnam Maritime Administration is seeking approval from the Ministry of Transport for a multi-million dollar project to set up an international passenger ship terminal and port on the southern island of Phu Quoc.

Official media reports said the harbor would be located at An Thoi Bay. The island stands 190 km west off the Mekong Delta coast of province of Kien Giang.

The proposed port would be able to handle large passenger ships capable of carrying 4,000 to 6,000 passengers, according to the Vietnam Maritime Administration.

The port will cover an area of 13,743 sqm and is estimated to cost $16.7 million.

Phu Quoc sits on a major sea lane and already has 19 international passenger ships making it a port of call on cruises out of Singapore.

Large passenger ships have to anchor off shore.

Forecasts suggest Phu Quoc will welcome from 105,000 to 190,000 cruise passengers a year from now until 2020 and possibly 350,000 to 550,000 a decade later.
