The city police commissioner had ordered that security guards must be deployed at all ATM centers, and surveillance cameras and burglar alarms be installed. On November 24, 1,037 ATM centers that failed to do so were shutdown by the police.
Although the police has ordered mandatory staffing of guards and installation of surveillance cameras, police commissioner Raghavendra H Auradkar said that there are 3,651 ATM kiosks in the city, of which 394 have no security guards.
“There is no uniformity in their request. Some banks want time till this month end, while others need three to six months more. They are citing there is no supply of alarms due to high demand. Some banks cite that their management wants state-of-the-art alarms and so they require time while others said their management has plans to implement it nationwide and hence its require a few months to be implemented,” he explained.
“While some are reluctant to fit cameras outside as it would require more space in hard disks, which would cost them more, others cited it was an internal matter. So, we have not come to any decision on extending the deadline. I will pass an order in this regard in a day or two,” he added.
