As Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung mentioned in a statement in January 2009, Vietnam should have 26 airports by 2020, and 10 of them will be international hubs. Recently, the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam announced a list of such projects; the construction and/or upgrade of four airports, for example, will cost more than US$8 billion (VND 170 trillion).

The four airports are:
* Long Thanh International: The first phase of construction, worth $7.5 billion, will be in Dong Nai Province and serve 25 million passengers annually. The second phase is still under research.

* Chu Lai International: The airport, located in the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone of Quang Nam Province, will be upgraded for a cost of $546.1 million. It will have two parallel runways, a passenger terminal that can accommodate 2.3 million passengers per year, and a cargo terminal handling 1.5 million tonnes per year. Construction is slated for 2015 to 2025.

* Quang Ninh: The two-phase upgrade in the Van Don Island district in Quang Ninh Province is estimated at US$243 million, and includes runways, taxiways, airfields, an air traffic control tower, a passenger terminal and a cargo terminal. The first phase from 2015 to 2025 will allow the airport to receive two million passengers and 4,050 tonnes of cargo annually; the second phase is expected to increase cargo capacity to 7,500 tonnes annually by 2030.

* Cam Ranh International: A total investment of approximately $214 million will upgrade this airport, which handles domestic and international flights to Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa Province. The construction is due to start in 2015 and be completed by 2030.
