The groundbreaking ceremony for the long-awaited Jakarta MRT finally took place in Dukuh Atas on Oct 10. The first phase is estimated to cost approximately US$1.5 billion and span 15.7 kilometers from Lebak Bulus in south Jakarta to central Jakarta.

There are a total of 13 stations in the project, including seven elevated and six underground stations, scheduled to begin operation by 2018. The construction will likely cause further traffic congestion of its own. As Dono Boestami, President Director of MRT Jakarta, pointed out, the company has acknowledged that traffic may get worse in certain areas, and the company has distributed leaflets to the public and has outlined alternative routes for motorists.

Boestami also said that video surveillance systems will be installed at all construction sites to help drivers; people can check out road conditions online first for proper trip planning.
