What mistakes to avoid when installing wireless cameras

Needless to say, wireless cameras are becoming more popular for both residential and commercial users due to their ease of installation. However there are still mistakes that end users can make while installing them. Avoiding these mistakes, therefore, is important.

“The biggest advantage of installing wireless CCTV cameras is that they're wireless. However, several things can still go wrong. This is due to the plug and plays nature of wireless CCTV cameras,” said a recent blogpost by DS Security. “But these mistakes can be avoided by being informed.”

Some of the easily-made mistakes and ways to avoid them are summarized as follows.

Improper positioning

According to the post, the right kind of wireless camera installation involves proper positioning. “You want to make sure that the camera records from the right angles. This means not getting the camera to point to the ground or exposing it to too much light. This can result in absolutely useless footage,” it said.

Going completely wireless

While certain wireless cams run on batteries, switching batteries from time to time can be burdensome especially if the camera is positioned high. “You will need wires to run the cameras. This is when you’ll need a permanent fixture to solve the problem. So, choose a spot that has the option of inserting electrical plugs,” it said.

Not installing enough cameras

According to the post, if the user lives in a suburban home and their only need is to monitor people at the door, a single camera is okay. A large property, however, is another story. “If you have a large property, you will need more than just one camera to monitor things. You need a complete view of the property. Only then can you enjoy full security,” it said. “If you have commercial space to worry about or a large piece of property, make sure to install at least three to four cameras.”

Forgetting the password

According to the post, wireless security cameras come with pre-configured passwords. “But you will need to change the default password and use a slightly more complicated code for extra security,” it said. “If you need extra security, you’re going to have to choose a camera that requires the user to enter a specific key for access while things are being set up. See if you can choose something with double encryption.”

Upside-down pictures

One of the most frustrating installation errors the user can make is installing the camera upside down, the post said. “This usually happens with rotatable wireless security cameras. Fortunately, you can fix the problem. The most natural solution might lie in the software you're using – it might allow you to flip the video stream,” it said. “But that only works if your software provides the option. A more permanent solution would be to mark the top and down sides with a marker. This will eliminate the problem once and for all.”

Not setting up Alerts

According to the post, the end user may not be there to monitor the cameras at all times. “If you're a professional organization, you can hire people. But that won't work for homeowners and even small business owners,” it said.

The solution is to switch on the alerts option, the post added. “The presence of cameras may be enough to drive away from most criminal elements. But some are a little craftier and more driven. If you're going to protect your home or office, you'll need to have the alerts switched on,” it said. “That way, you can be notified even when you’re away. So, you’ll be able to call the authorities in time and can contact anyone inside your home amd office to alert them of the impending threat.”
