VIVOTEK: We should develop AI that can fulfill the users’ real demands

VIVOTEK: We should develop AI that can fulfill the users’ real demands
Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a must-have for most video surveillance system providers. Many companies boast of its superb recognition and analytic functions, especially when it comes to face recognition. However, many end users still have some concerns with AI due to privacy issues.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a must-have for most video surveillance system providers. Many companies boast of its superb recognition and analytic functions, especially when it comes to face recognition. However, many end users still have some concerns with AI due to privacy issues.

Owen Chen, Chairman of VIVOTEK, said, "Most people misunderstand that AI is all about face recognition and its ability to quickly recognize a person in any kind of environment. However, for VIVOTEK, technology isn’t our main focus. As a security system provider, we try our best to make people feel secure with AI by creating something that can fulfill the users’ real demands and also protect individual privacy.”

VIVOTEK, a leading video surveillance system provider, recently established an AI lab to concentrate on developing AI applications.

Developing AI-based on vertical needs

As a professional security camera manufacturer, VIVOTEK is focused on developing AI technology and deep learning on the edge (camera). Chen said, "We aim to develop advanced video content analysis (VCA) solutions for three main verticals — retail, transportation and building automation. Our focus has always been on how we can reduce false alarms and enhance business or operational intelligence. That is why besides face recognition, we are focused on developing advanced VCA functionalities that can recognize people and vehicles as well as perform smart searches.”

In retail, VIVOTEK's popular 3D cameras can provide retailers more business intelligence functions, like people counting, heat maps and customer flow.

Touching upon VIVOTEK's offerings for the transportation vertical, Chen said, "We provide onboard, wayside and station surveillance systems. For instance, in road monitoring, we have partnered with many third parties to develop various smart functions for license plate recognition that can be configured to read license plates in many different countries.”

Chen continued, “We don't put too much emphasis on face recognition; but rather on other vertical-specific analysis to provide businesses information that can increase efficacy and even help users save on additional business costs. This way, people will feel more secure and comfortable with AI.”

Foreseeing a bright future with AI

In light of the latest AI developments, VIVOTEK foresees a bright future for security. VIVOTEK recently formed the Open Security and Safety Alliance (OSSA) with several other top security companies. The mission of the alliance is to develop a security-specific operating system (OS) on which software developers can develop different apps and AI functions. In the future, the apps can be downloaded to enhance and expand camera functions. "We hope the industry OS can also drive the security industry forward, like how the latest smartphone developments have driven growth in the smartphone market," said Chen.

VIVOTEK is working to solve major concerns users have about AI by creating great value for its customers. At the same time, VIVOTEK and the other top companies are promoting OSSA in order to encourage new companies to join the security industry.
