Announced back in September 2017, the Nest Hello doorbell is ready to meet customers in March. Nest’s first smart doorbell Hello features a HDR 160-degree field of view and allows users to send and receive audio from the smartphone app.

The camera has a built-in wedge so that users can adjust the angle of the camera to match the doorstep setup. Hello also has a speaker and microphone to allow users to communicate with guests at the door via smartphones.

Other features include “Nap Time Mode” which enables the do-not-disturb status for the house; “Quick Response” that lets users pre-record a message and play it when someone comes. For instance, it can tell a deliveryman to leave the package at the door; and “Warm Welcome” to shine a light to greet anyone who walks up to the door.

Since the doorbell belongs to the Nest Cam family, it is capable of facial recognition and sending alerts, to send a headshot of the person standing by the door.

For Nest Aware subscribers, Hello will constantly monitor activities by the front door and send them notifications if something unusual, like strangers talking at the door, happens. In this case, homeowners won’t miss any suspicious actions close to their front door whether the doorbell was rang or not.

In an interview with The Independent, Nest CEO Marwan Fawaz said, “It’s not the typical doorbell. It’s got the Nest look and design. Before you even press the button, just as you move closer to when it’s dark, it will light up. This is a wired product, so if consumers are not comfortable with the wires because it has power on it, they can have the comfort of a certified technician to connect the wires to it.”

The Nest Hello will be available in March for US$229. Through a pre-order, customers will receive a free Google Home Mini as well.

Starting with a smart thermostat, Nest has added more devices to its product portfolio, including security camera, smart home security system and now the new video doorbell. The company wants to take the market with a comprehensive smart product offering. Meanwhile, how it differentiates itself from other companies that provide similar integrated solutions remains uncertain.
