Popp introduces world’s first Z-Wave rain gauge for smart homes

Z-Wave Europe GmbH, the leading European distributor for Z-Wave based products, announced that “Popp” is introducing the world's first Z-Wave rain gauge at the IFA show in Berlin.

With the “Z-Rain” rain gauge, the traditional company Popp & Co. will introduce once again an innovative device, which is the first of its kind. The “Z-Rain” is not just a rain sensor, which provides information about if it is raining or not, but it also provides information about the current and total rainfall in a period. The internal counter measures the amount of rainfall in mm / h and indicates the result cumulatively in m³/m².

On that result, actions can be triggered for starting or stopping rainfall, such as automated closing of windows, awnings or shutters.

By measuring the rainfall, the user can be notified about severe weather and heavy rain that is above the critical amount of fallen rain. Using Z-rain within his Z-Wave network, the Smart Home user can receive these notifications anywhere, anytime on his smartphone and can take appropriate action.

Measured rainfall is helpful in Smart Garden as well, for example in order to determine the exact amount of water the plants need to be poured.

“Z-Rain” is powered by 2 simple AA batteries, allowing the installation at any location within the range of the Z-Wave network. Typical outdoor range of Z-Wave is 40-100 meters. That range can be increased by other active Z-Wave components.
