If you are a frequent traveler, at least once would have felt annoyed at the flimsy paper tags stuck on luggage. Well, you don't need to anymore! The suitcase manufacturer RIMOWA has come up with a solution that can get rid of the annoying and inefficient paper tags that are currently in use at airports.
The RIMOWA Electronic Tag is the first fully-integrated digital suitcase. With this new technology, travelers will be able to check-in their luggage with their airline directly from home or on the road using their smartphone. They can drop their luggage off at the airport within seconds, without stress and waiting in long lines.
RIMOWA Electronic Tag replaces the usual paper tag with a digital data module to which airline’s luggage data is transmitted. This makes the transition from analog to digital very simple. RIMOWA Electronic Tag was launched in March 2016 and according to the company, to date more than 18,000 customers have registered with its app.
“Travelers save time and stress when they check-in their luggage remotely and away from the airport,” said Sven Lepschy, VP of RIMOWA Electronic Tag. “They don’t have to arrive at the airport hours before the flight, but can easily use a drop off station at the airport without queuing. Moreover, it’s almost impossible that a suitcase with RIMOWA Electronic Tag will be loaded into the wrong airplane because it can’t accidentally be torn off as usual paper luggage tags. The important information is protected from impact, moisture, heat, cold, shocks and vibration. Additionally, the display can be customized with initials, address and a photo which makes the suitcase one of a kind and easier to recognize on the luggage belt.”
The new technology also helps airlines save on resources. First of all, they need less paper when the paper labels are replaced. Second, reduced check in staff is required and can be reassigned in different areas to add more customer service, while the passengers start the check-in process ahead of arriving to the airport. Moreover, airlines can process more passengers at a time, since the global passenger travel is slated to double by 2035.
Speaking of the future, Lepschy said that the company believes in changing the status quo, giving passengers control of their own check in process and move to a complete digital way of traveling.
