Installing video door entry systems: how to overcome the challenges

Installing audio and video door entry system in an area with several buildings comes with quite a few challenges. Key among them are interconnectivity, distance and the intercom system itself, according to a blog post by Fermax, which goes on to point out the single major challenge and a solution.

"Some of the biggest issues to overcome are the long distances, the number of outdoor panels and any already existing wiring. Without a doubt, however, the main challenge for many builders or real estate developers is to find a system which offers the best performance at a reasonable price, which uses the most economical wiring, and at the same time, the system is functional and aesthetically attractive for end-users," the blog post said. "Furthermore, it is important to consider which type of system will be installed (audio or video) and to analyze the costs of each option."

Wiring in large building complexes are usually underground. This leads to problems such as conflicts with power lines or pumps and generators. To solve the large distance that installers encounter, Fermax has developed a system with two non-polarized wires. Called Duox, it is not affected by any kind of interference during installation, according to the company.

"In an average project, the height of a building could be up to 200 meters, meaning that in a project which involves a few large buildings, the wiring can be several kilometers long," the blog post said. "So how can we avoid wiring and communication problems? Regenerators can be a simple approach to deal with these cases."

The solution that Fermax devises can handle installations involving long distances without intervention at every outdoor panel. It can even use the existing wiring if it is still in good condition. Moreover, the system is flexible, meaning that the user can decide between an indoor audio or video station. If user initially decides to install a telephone, then it's possible to switch to a video door entry monitor.

The company also provides an alternative, a TCP/IP based system that's ideal for use in large residential and commercial complexes. From the perspective of installers, real estate developments of such massive scale shouldn't be taken lightly.

"Not just any intercom system can be used in such large buildings which have a high number of interconnections and many residents," Fermax pointed out. "In this kind of projects, we are not only faced with the large number of storeys (which almost reaches the heavens...) but also various access points that must be connected one to another."

Using this particular solution, developers can facilitate communication throughout a building complex, while at the same time taking care of other facilities like turning on lights, security systems etc.
