a&s International recently spoke with Axis Communications founder Martin Gren who discussed various topics, including the story behind the first network camera that came about 20 years ago in 1996.

Axis, based in Sweden, of course is the inventor of the network camera, which revolutionized security and the way video surveillance is done. Today across the world, new projects almost always spec in network cameras.

The company also ranks as one of the biggest security companies in the world. On a&s’s Security 50 this year, Axis ranks No. 8 in terms of total revenue and No. 12 in terms of revenue growth.

Besides network cameras, Gren, who was on a visit in Taiwan, also mentioned some of the trends that can be expected in the security industry, for example integration of more networkable devices over the Internet, the offering of complete end-to-end systems to facilitate systems integrators and end users, and the use of security in non-security applications, for example the use of analytics to streamline operations for retail.

But according to Gren, none of these compares with the issue of cybersecurity, now or future, as security migrates more and more towards IP. The threat of cyberattacks couldn’t be any clearer than the DDoS attack against an Internet performance management company in October, which led to shutdowns across various service providers such as Amazon and Spotify. It was suspected network devices, including cameras and NVRs, were used as robotic attackers.

To this, Gren said none of Axis’s products were affected, adding that the company places a strong emphasis on cybersecurity.

All this, and more, will appear in a more in-depth article to feature on asmag.com soon. So stay tuned.
