5 benefits of adding audio to campus security

5 benefits of adding audio to campus security
When implementing security solutions in schools, video surveillance alone may not always be enough. Especially in the light of recent incidents such as the presence of an active shooter on campus, video systems would do well to be paired with audio solutions that can detect threats and warn authorities real-time.
When implementing security solutions in schools, video surveillance alone may not always be enough. Especially in the light of recent incidents such as active shooters on campuses, video systems would do well to be paired with audio solutions that can detect threats and warn authorities real-time.

In a recently published whitepaper, Louroe Electronics provided some of the key benefits of installing audio-visual solutions.

1. Extra evidence

Incorporating audio with video enables the collection of more details about a suspect or a crime scene.

“Voices, names, languages spoken and directives are just a few examples of what information can be aggregated,” the whitepaper said. “This additional data is crucial for first responders as they assess the suspect’s intentions and threat level.”

2. Better monitoring

Cameras may not always catch every incident or threat, especially in large campuses that have too much area to cover. Audio solutions come in handy here, as an additional source of protection.

To compensate for blind spots or limited staffing, install audio equipment in school common areas and around the perimeter, particularly in the areas that lack cameras, Louroe recommends. “The sound solutions will capture any suspicious noises, during and after school hours, and will give staff an early warning sign of any suspicious activity.”

3. Crime prevention

It’s not just for detection that audio solutions come in handy, but in crime deterrence too. For instance, in a situation where an unwanted person walks into school premises after hours, a two-way audio unit allows security personnel to speak to the individual remotely in real-time.

“Having the ability to communicate in real-time can be a powerful warning that dissuades a trespasser from vandalizing the property or committing other offenses,” the whitepaper said.

4. Dispute resolution

In the event of a dispute between two parties on what actually happened, audio solutions come in handy. This is especially true in cases like bullying where a lot of verbal abuse comes into play. With the right audio systems, authorities would be able to identify who is at fault and who the victim is.

“Installing microphones at a school’s key traffic or interaction points provides accountability by documenting what is said, which can then be used to resolve disputes or placate verbally hostile individuals,” the whitepaper noted, adding, “For all high traffic campus areas under surveillance, ensure that cameras are paired with external microphones. Make sure to mount the microphones close to the desired area or object for optimal performance.”

5. Better ROI

Integrating audio to security systems can be a cost-effective upgrade, according to Louroe. In some cases, this is as easy as adding a microphone to the existing cameras, while in other cases the solutions can be integrated with cameras or access control solutions.
