WONWOO, a Korean exhibitor at secutech this year, has on display a variety of 4K cameras enabled with ex-SDI, a step up from the previous HD-SDI technology.

Barry Lee, Product Manager with WONWOO, notes that ex-SDI offers many advantages over its predecessor. That’s why many end users opt to adopt the technology, despite its higher price.

“The ex-SDI technology is based on HD-SDI yet extends distance to 450 meters,” he said. “We are using coaxial cable transmitting signals that are totally digital. For analog signal you always get interference or noise. Ex-SDI is digital, and there is no video degradation.”

According to him, the so-called HD analog carries a lower technology threshold and has its limitations. “Some of our customers from Japan and the U.S. don’t like HD analog, which they say will disappear in two years,” Lee said. “There is always a limitation for using analog. Besides interference, video quality is also an issue. Some HD analog solutions providers for example claim they have 4K, but it’s at a reduced frame rate, not real time.”

“But ex-SDI is unique, and there is a higher technology threshold,” he added. “That’s why we keep developing ex-SDI.”

Among WONWOO’s other exhibits are high-sensitivity cameras used in extremely low-light conditions, as well as zoom modules that are supplied to camera manufacturers, including those from Taiwan.

According to Lee, the company is strong in technical support. “We always go to customers and customize their zoom modules, fine-tuning them to the customer’s own chipset,” he said.
