Biometrics Alliance Initiative reveals new evaluation and certification benchmark

Biometrics Alliance Initiative reveals new evaluation and certification benchmark
The Biometrics Alliance Initiative recently announced the availability of its evaluation and certification template for biometric technologies used in biometric-based non-governmental solutions. This template enables the evaluation and certification of biometric technologies in a consistent manner that encompasses all their various aspects while establishing a common approach for laboratories.

This benchmark has benefited from the expertise and contributions of four major types of actors involved in the implementation of biometric technologies: R&D laboratories, evaluation laboratories and certification bodies, end users who rely on biometric technologies to propose new services or a new user experience, and industrial firms.

This benchmark fulfills the need for visibility and transparency regarding the underpinnings of biometric solutions. It also lays the foundations enabling companies seeking to deploy biometric technologies, to evaluate and appreciate the performance of their chosen solution.

Finalizing these initial steps will aim at implementing an evaluation and certification template based on a joint assessment of the various dimensions characterizing biometrics, including: functionalities, performance, interoperability, environment, and security.

This benchmark is made available in a context where the field of mass market biometrics is expanding (development of new uses, installation on various platforms, multiplicity of protocols, etc.) and where proprietary technologies whose actual performance cannot be precisely gauged are being rolled out. It also aims at guiding the strategy being devised by institutions on the use and generalization of this type of technology. Lastly, it intends to provide industrial leaders with better knowledge of actual technology use conditions.

This benchmark is naturally referenced within existing standards as a means of offering:
• an operational evaluation template for industrial laboratories and certification bodies
• compatibility with the set of R&D work being conducted by university laboratories
• an operational methodology shared by all laboratories, enabling empirical, objective comparison of the various technologies being applied
