Paxton Access: Moving from devices to integrated systems

Paxton Access, a UK-based company, has carved a niche for themselves in the security market, with their flagship network access control systems. Soon to launch an integrated building intelligence system, Paxton is now poised to further solidify its position as a leading global access control solution provider.

Over the past 30 years, Paxton Access has continuously grown by expanding its services overseas through partnerships and products that address their customers' needs. Their newest innovation is a step forward in addressing the growing demand in the mid-market for fully integrated security systems.

Mid-Market Systems Integration Potential
With most security companies vying for large-scale, big-name projects, it is easy to overlook the potential that exists in the middle market. Even though mid-market projects might not be as lucrative, it compensates for it in numbers as most non-residential buildings are included under this category.

Many assume that the systems and solutions that work for larger projects and firms are also applicable for this part of the market but this may not be the case.

According to their website, Paxton believes that the traditional approach of systems integration, which involves finding ways for multiple subsystems to function and work together, might not be suitable for all cases. Not only do mid-sized companies have to cope with difficulties associated with installing and maintaining several discrete systems, they also have to deal with multiple suppliers. As a result, many companies are deterred from fully integrating their existing security system and reaping its benefits.

In fact, Paxton's recent research found that less than two percent of their customers' access control systems were integrated with video despite half of them already having local video surveillance systems.

Therefore, the next logical step in the evolution of the security industry is to create a single multi-tasking system that would address the limitation issues and hassles often encountered when merging different systems. Integration is still key; however, it should be done in a way that is both practical and applicable for consumers.

From Devices to Fully Integrated Building Management Systems
In order to address these challenges and respond to the evolving needs of consumers, the company is now offering management solutions — a new fully integrated building intelligence system that offers end users access control, IP video management, and building automation functionality.

Working with inputs collected from multiple sources such as RFID tokens or Bluetooth smart devices and video footage, this single server system can verify a person’s identity or note environmental changes. It can then communicate with the existing building infrastructure to adjust the lighting, heating, air-conditioning correspondingly, as well as control security measures like intruder and fire alarms.

With this new approach to building intelligence, all the features come in one convenient package, eliminating the need for multiple systems and expensive costs. This move represents a big step toward integrated systems by Paxton, becoming a solution provider for the systems integrators.

About Paxton Access:
2015 marked Paxton's 30th year in the security industry. Since 1985, the company has expanded their services to more than 40 countries worldwide, across Europe, U.S., Africa, Middle East and Asia. The company has reportedly more than doubled their current market growth every year in the last two decades.

As part of their goal of achieving a turnover of approximately US$154 million by 2020, representing a growth rate of 24 percent per year, the company has been focusing most of its efforts overseas, investing in training local teams and developing products that cater to regional differences in the global market.

Paxton consistently focuses on making strategic partnerships, allowing integration with card readers, video management systems (VMS), physical security information management (PSIM), cameras, intruder alarms, cylinder locks, and biometric; and solutions such as time and attendance as well as visitor management.

They have partnered with, amongst others, Entertech Systems, a UK biometrics company using Suprema readers; Qulu, a UK VMS; and Uhlmann & Zacher, a German electronic lock systems provider to further provide integration within Europe. Other strategic partners include Milestone Systems, Avigilon, Thinking Software, Network Optix, HID Global, and Jonas Clubminder.

Their projects include installations at Aéroport de Cherbourg, an airport in France; Manchester United Football Club, Michelin, Tsukuba University in Japan and the Powerscourt Estate, a leading visitor attraction in Ireland.
