Industry perspective: Libyan security market to grow in 2014

After the Libyan civil war, the country has been engaged in violent conflicts. Constant social instability and the widespread availability of weapons have led to an increasing need for security measures. These factors would contribute to the expected growth of the Libyan security market in the coming months.

“This will widen the market for more security systems in order to limit the number of accidents within any buildings, whether they are residential, commercial, governmental, or private,” said Stephen Polidano, Business Development Manager of Construction Sector at Alberta Libya.

“The continuous incidents and events that are happening in this country, where the use of light weapons became the norm of the day, are driving the request for all sorts of security measures to limit the access of weapons where these are not required.”

“Especially in Libya where the economy is mostly based on construction and exports of raw material,” Polidano said, “the unpredictable future of the Libyan economy, along with the lack of foreign investment, reduction in export of crude oil, and lack of production from local companies will surely influence all vertical markets.”

Security Products
In Libya, network video surveillance has become the most requested commodity, as small- to mid-size enterprises gradually come to understand the benefits of using IP-based systems; one of these benefits is that it can be directly applied to a readily available infrastructure.

While the trend is to go for IP-based cameras, traditional analog cameras and HD-SDI cameras are still being widely adopted, but only when there is a special requirement that needs to be met. Such cases can be found in the oil and gas and construction sectors, according to Polidano.

Polidano also mentioned that the markets for x-ray machines, metal detectors, vehicle scanners, and other devices that can be used to detect and prevent weapons from being brought into buildings also show promise in Libya.

Major Challenges
Generally speaking, the biggest challenge in the market for systems integrators and installers is that there are various cheaply manufactured systems being imported from all over the world. With no one controlling this influx, quality companies now have to compete with cheaper brands and cheaply manufactured products. It is very difficult to justify a good product when cheaper products also claim to have the same functionalities as the expensive ones, causing quality companies major headaches.
