3M Cogent has won a three-year contract from the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) to provide software and services for DIAC's new biometric identification system. The new system is designed to handle the acquisition, quality checking, matching and storage of biometric data.

DIAC's mandate is to 'build Australia's future through the well-managed movement and settlement of people'. The department manages the arrival and settlement of immigrants, issues more than 4.3 million visas and helps facilitate the border crossings of more than 30 million people annually. Through competitive tendering, DIAC selected the 3M automated biometric identification system as the solution that best meets their business requirements. The new integrated system replaces a legacy biometric system, providing the department with enhanced identity verification capabilities, and greater flexibility to meet evolving business requirements.

The system is a multi-modal, scalable, and customizable solution that provides fast, accurate fingerprint and facial recognition matching. The system ensures service resiliency with associated biometric identity management modules to help improve information sharing and operational efficiencies.

“We are pleased the DIAC selected 3M as their biometric system technology partner,” said Gary Stapleton, Managing Director of Australia and New Zealand, 3M. “The 3M technology will enable the department to deliver significant service improvements and efficiencies over the coming years.”
