Irish hospital embraces megapixel surveillance
Waterford Regional Hospital, a public hospital located in Waterford City, Waterford, Ireland, has recently deployed an IP surveillance system consisting of 63 IQinVision HD megapixel cameras and Milestone corporate level VMS throughout the hospital and grounds during a major video surveillance system upgrade. GVD, a local specialist value-added distributor of IP technology, and Park 100, an innovative security integrator, were involved in the sale, design, and installation of the new surveillance system.

With the building of the new emergency department at the hospital, the Health and Safety Executive felt it was the ideal opportunity to embrace IP technology for their security and video surveillance requirements. The new department is larger than the previous facility. Patient care in the department is supported by a minor injuries unit, a six-bed medical assessment unit, and a 29-bed acute medical unit which facilitate fast-tracking of acutely-ill patients and access for patients to senior decision-making about their admission or discharge.

The surveillance upgrade project comprised fitting out the new emergency department unit with D/N domes, which have a full HD resolution of 1080p equivalent to 2.1-megapixels. The domes were chosen after a successful trial of the cameras showed clear footage for both day and night time scenarios. Full weather PoE cameras were chosen for outdoor installation, so no additional power was required for heating or fans.

Milestone corporate version VMS provides the backbone for the recording platform. Milestone was chosen because of its world leading status in terms of IP VMS, for its ease of integration with third-party systems. As the hospital is a critical site, having built-in redundancy in both the recording server hardware and software was paramount.

Video surveillance footage, both live and recorded, can now be accessed from anywhere on the network using Milestone's free client software. The robust system architecture allows for an unlimited number of users to view megapixel-quality footage on the system simultaneously. The security officers at the hospital have a modernized security room as part of the new ED.
