Leading control room furniture manufacturer Winsted EMEA has supplied a range of futuristic equipment for SSE plc (Scottish & Southern Energy).

Winsted was selected to design, manufacture and install the control room consoles at SSE's Equipment Performance Centre (part of the company's Engineering Centre located at Ferrybridge C Power Station complex near Knottingly, West Yorkshire), which looks after all the energy company's power generating operations around Britain. SSE is the second largest supplier of electricity and natural gas in the UK, and the country's largest generator of renewable energy.

SSE's Equipment Performance Centre monitors eight major power generating stations, including thermal, hydro-electric, wind turbines and other renewable energy sources. The West Yorkshire-situated operation provides continuous improvement in asset reliability, performance and productivity for SSE's business critical assets across the UK. It continuously monitors the health of power generation and auxiliary plant machinery to detect early signs of equipment defects or failures requiring remedial action by maintenance engineers and operational planners.

Seth Muthuraman, Condition Monitoring Engineer at SSE, who's overseen the new control room project for the Engineering Performance Centre, explains that the new monitoring arrangements will enable the Centre to become a 24-hour operation in the future, utilizing the benefits of its ergonomically designed furniture. Winsted won a competitive tender for this project, supplying its Prestige Insight console, which has an overall depth of 32 inches to save valuable space and maximize control room functionality. Winsted provided a 15-degree curve for this custom-made console, also designed to meet the operational space restrictions, since the new monitoring arrangements had to be accommodated within the same physical space as their predecessor.

Winsted also supplied monitor mounts for a total of 12 20-inch screens, as well as CPU mounts and 24-hour chairs for the operators. “Led by Darryl Lymer, Winsted's team were very professional in handling the tender process and producing 3D drawings and renderings, as well as supplying us with 3D software to brainstorm ideas at the design stage,” Mr. Muthuraman comments.

Winsted's custom design service incorporates ergonomic expertise to ensure that operators benefit from appropriate knee space, viewing distances, sight lines, view-over heights, reach and related elements that help ensure a comfortable, efficient and effective working environment
