Conexant Introduces New Eight-Channel Video/Audio Decoder for Video Surveillance and Automotive Applications

Conexant Systems, a leading supplier of innovative semiconductor solutions for imaging, audio, embedded modem, and video surveillance applications, announced the CX25828, a highly flexible eight-channel video/audio decoder designed for surveillance applications. The CX25828 features eight high quality NTSC/PAL video decoders, nine audio ADCs and one audio DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) for audio playback or two-way communication applications.

The new system-on-chip (SoC) is the latest in a line of products from Conexant specifically designed for advanced, high-capacity DVR video surveillance products that capture and record multiple video streams simultaneously. In addition, Conexant has an industrial temperature grade version, which is ideally suited for the growing automotive market.

Xiongmai Technology, a security industry equipment supplier in Hangzhou, China, has selected Conexant's CX25828 video/audio decoder for their CIF and D1 series of CCTV DVR video surveillance systems. These designs from Xiongmai utilize HiSilicon's mainstream codec, Hi3515. “Conexant's expertise in video technologies and systems made their video decoder a perfect fit for our security surveillance systems,” noted Chen Jinsheng, Xiongmai GM. “Our goal was to drive down overall system cost and improve the overall video quality in our systems, and the CX25828 has helped us achieve this. The chip's enhanced video processor and comb filter result in high video quality and its flexible audio/video interface enables cost-effective DVR implementations with various codec SoCs.”

Conexant's CX25828 is designed with 10-bit ADCs and 5-line comb filtering for optimal color separation, generating the highest quality digital video output with the lowest possible noise and cross-luma/cross-chroma artifacts. Additionally, the decoder is optimized to lock to inputs with low signal levels as well as line-locked cameras, both of which are commonly found in video surveillance systems. Offering extreme flexibility, the CX25828 provides bi-directional bridging of video and audio data, as well as connectivity through GPIO and I2C interfaces.

“Conexant's next generation of video decoders builds upon our successful introduction of the industry's first eight-channel video decoder to the marketplace,” said Sailesh Chittipeddi, Ph.D., President and CEO for Conexant. “Our fifth generation decoders achieve the industry's best interface flexibility, are easy to use and expedite time to market in PC and embedded multi-channel DVR applications.”

The CX25828 supports the standard ITU-R BT.656 digital video format and byte-multiplexed output at 27, 54 and 108 MHz. Each video decoder includes a motion detection and image analytical engine, features which can be used to notify host controllers to begin recording or wake from sleep during detected events.
