Security specialist Abloy UK has provided an innovative access control solution for a primary school in South Gloucestershire, helping to balance freedom of movement with building security and pupil safety.

Abloy's Smartair access control system was installed in a primary school in South Gloucestershire on the school's 39 internal and external doors, as well as the perimeter gates.

Smartair is a revolutionary card-read access control platform that offers convenience and real flexibility, and easily adapts to all kinds of new-build and retrofit installations in the education sector.

Teachers can unlock the classroom doors by simply swiping their card against the Smartair door handle. A ‘double swipe' keeps the classroom door unlocked to allow pupils in and out during break times and once all pupils have returned, the doors can be locked again with a second ‘double swipe'.

In the event of an emergency, the door can be swiftly opened by pressing the handle down, with no need for a key or card.

Smartair cards are also issued to local village organizations, which hire the school's sports hall outside school hours. The cards will only open doors that lead to the sports hall and are programmed to allow access on specific dates and times to maintain security and prevent the hall being double booked.

“Providing a safe learning environment for pupils is important to all schools. It can be difficult to secure fire escape and playground doors because they are often propped open to allow pupils and staff to move around easily. “Smartair is a flexible and easy to use access control solution, ideally suited to today's schools buildings which are increasingly used out of hours by the local community,” said Mike Coupe of the installing company Avon Armour.

“This is very much a flagship project for the area, with two local schools amalgamated in to one attractive learning centre,” added Duncan Rigby, Regional Manager for Abloy UK.

Abloy UK supplies a market-leading range of padlocks, electric locks and cylinders for cabinets and doors in retail, leisure and museum environments as well as utilities, telecommunications and military applications.
